Time to hit Jamaica mon! The price is right (not Asia right though) when you stay and eat with the locals. Great place to spend some extended time and travel the entire island. English is spoken and the US dollar accepted. The fresh food is superb and so is the climate. Run with the Rasta's and enjoy the Caribbean Ocean and Blue Mountains. You can then easily hit Cuba from there (before it turns into a US tourist destination). Here's the coolest Jamaican friend/driver I know and a wonderful Jamaican family to stay with in small Jamaican village outside of Negril.

Hey Andy,

I love it when you "poke and nudge" the people who spend their days in cubicles. What's the best advice you have for the people like me who are having a difficult time deciding what they want to do with their lives?

Hey Andy,

I hope you are holding up well concerning the circumstances. My dad just went through prostate cancer and it has not spread - hope it doesn't.

It's time that everyone realizes that "America" is just one big corporation and unfortunately "we the people" are not the stockholders.

There is no difference between democrats and republicans - they exist to make us believe that we have a choice and that the US is a free country. They are both put in power by the same corporation that will charge a sick person $50 a pill when they are desperate. We live in a country where war is called "peace process" and the majority of citizens believe it because they would rather watch 109 channels of sports or American Idol versus doing a little research and digging out the truth.

The only thing I want to see in my lifetime is for this shit to stop. Unfortunately, the older I get, the more I believe it will take a visit from the green aliens or total annihilation to change things in the US Empire.

Frank commented about My Thai Girlfriend Comes to Baguio Philippines, On Saturday July 25th, 2009 09:51:45 PM

Hi Andy,

I was just checking out your FAQ - it looks like its time to update your favorite places to travel:

I think most about returning to Thailand, it has the cheapest living, with the most options or choices. I can live in a beach hut for 3 dollars per night, watch a movie at a restuarant, while eating for 1 dollar. Then meet persons from all over the planet, when I am bored the plane fares are cheap from Bangkok, therefore I can fly anywhere on the planet for less than about 700 dollars

I would love it if you would even write more about the vices that you come across when traveling. Not because I like to partake but because its interesting and a big part of travel for some. Writing about travel to Thailand and the Philippines with out mentioning the bar girls doesnt give your readers the whole story.

Hell yes, put some of those freaky comments up - fun to read the writing of the crazies.

I am a healthy white male born in the USA to the best parents one could possibly have. I am not better than any person, just lucky. Even with all this going for me, I still hate the world. Children are raped, beaten, born with AIDS, leukemia, mental illness, live in poverty with parents who dont want them - is life good for them? I would like to think that life is good applies to all but I know it doesnt and trying to force myself to believe in something I know aint so will eventually cause insanity. Just think about what life would be like for you if you carried youre childhood belief in Santa Claus into adulthood and to the grave.

How does anyone that is not ignorant avoid hating the world without completely ignoring it - advice welcome?

I certainly dont want your great website to turn into a dating website as I appreciate your creation as it is. However, whats wrong with having an unobtrusive link to a section where people with similar interests can get to know each other? Yes, you are right - I want a nice girl only.

Frank commented about July 4 in USA 2009, On Sunday July 5th, 2009 02:31:29 PM

Hi Andy,

I have to know - if you feel the US is so great - why have you stayed away for 11 years?

I think that you are wrong stating that the USA is hated by so many countries because the USA says stop abusing your people. In reality I think other countries hate the US because the common people of other countries know that we have over 700 military bases in countries all over the world and in the last 100 or so years the USA has overthrown 15 or so governments - starting with Hawaii and ending with Iraq/Afghanistan - simply because they had resources/markets US corporations wanted. Its funny how a taco vender in Mexico or a gardener in Jamaica knows this but most upper class US citizens dont.

I was at a party in the US recently and I asked several of the upper class and educated people at the party to name just one president or leader of another foreign country. Not one f@king person could - not one. Who is the president of China with 1.3 billion people? Who is the president of Mexico - our neighbor to the south? Who is the prime minister of Canada - our neighbor to the north? Do you know why none of these upper class and educated US people couldnt name another leader of a foreign country? - because they just dont give a sh$t.

Also, the taco vendors and gardeners of foreign countries know about World Bank, IMF and School of the Americas. They know who runs them and they know who benefits from their existence.

No - the few things you mentioned typically dont happen to US citizens in the US. However, they do happen daily to citizens of other countries because of the fact that the US government supported some leader who was friendly to US corporations. An example of this is when the US overthrew the democratically elected leader of Iran in 1953 because he wanted to use the profits of his counties oil to eliminate the extreme poverty in Iran and not have the money go to US oil companies. This resulted in the Iraninan revolution and further repression of the Iranian people. Trust me, this was only in 1953, there are still a lot of Iranians living that remember the US overthrow of their beloved Mossaddeq - that is why they hate us.

These are some of the real reason(s) the US is hated by other countries.

As a service to your loyal readers, please post some photos and post short bios of nice and attractive Thai girls that you meet in your travels that would like to meet a nice man from the states. Frank commented about Nakuru Kenya, On Saturday April 11th, 2009 08:53:36 PM

The way she is bent over is very comfortable. A person can work 8 hours a day bent in the posture of that woman and not feel any strain. Note that she is bending at the hips rather than the waist. This requires flexible hamstring muscles. Most American bend at the waist rather than the hips because they are not flexible in the hamstrings. Bending at the waist is very damaging to the body.

I had a question that might make for an interesting informational post on your website as most novice travelers like myself always overpack. As a long time reader of your blog, I know you travel light. I want to know in regards to clothing, how many shirts, pants, socks, underwear you typically carry at one time and how often you do laundry?

There is another huge benefit of relocating, provided you do this for most of the year (not only the winter months): If your employer agree, you can officially quit your job, then register an offshore company in some zero-tax country, and then selling your services to your previous employer at the same rate as before, while paying zero tax!
Works like a dream for me, I travel freely around in low cost SE Asia, and at the same time doubled my previously high taxed European income! hehe. I only need an internet connection.

frank commented about Goodbye to Electric Hotplate, On Sunday April 29th, 2007 09:34:00 AM

Have you tried buying denatured alcohol at pharmacies? Alcohol is widely used around the world, even in Arab countries, as a disinfectant. Denatured means some sort of substance is added to the alcohol which causes nausea if people drink the alcohol rather than applying to the skin. Denatured ETHYL alcohol (not ispropyl alcohol) with 90% or more alcohol (and thus less then 10% water) is what you want. Too much water or isopropyl alcohol causes sooty flame.

Frank commented about Difficult Mosquito Nets, On Friday April 27th, 2007 10:30:00 AM

>I'm going to buy one soon and am leaning towards getting the light free standing ones that you don't have to hang. Untreated.

A free standing bug-tent, such as the ones sold at rei.com is a good idea. Another possibility is a simple bug-bivy which only needs to be supported by a hook on the wall above the head. Since most beds rest with the head end against the wall, you can drive a nail above the head if needed. With the type of net shown in Andy's photos, you need an overhead support and that is going to be tough to find or create in most hotel rooms. The advantage of Andy's net is that it is much cooler because of all the space it creates.

Eric, why are you opposed to treating your net with Permethrin? This is what the UN recommends (that phrase "traite avec insecticide" in the UN sign is referring to permethrin), this is what the military requires and what everyone who has studied the subject recommends. Permethrin is the same chemical used in dog flea/tick collars, so if you've ever touched one of those, you've been exposed to it. It is also the same chemical found naturally in chrysanthemum plants. Long-term studies have shown the human body easily metabolizes and excretes this chemical if absorbed. And in any case, there is little chance of absorbing the chemical from a piece of netting. Even from clothing worn directly against the skin, the amount of chemical absorbed is negligible. I'm certainly not in the business of pushing Permethrin, but I have a feeling there is some knee-jerk fear of chemicals going on here. I say this because I felt the same way about the permethrin myself. It does stink something fearsome in the form it comes in the bottle. But now that I've used the chemical for a while and studied the subject more, I realize I was just being irrational.
