Andy, I just got back from a 6 month road trip of the USA. If you think it is bad - try the UK. I had a car in the USA. By far, the easiest way to get free wifi is in the suburbs. I would drive a couple of blocks into a suburb, then drive slower down the street searching for wifi. When I found it, I would stop and sit in the car with my laptop. Otherwise, a lot of coffee shops (if you can find one). Rarely motels and rarely shops. It's really pot luck as to whether people have secured their wifi or not. That's it.

Hi Andy,
Thank you very much for checking out my blog. I thought I would reply on this post of yours, since there are no other comments.
I am flying from Brisbane direct to LA. Then - six months to NYC.
I think that South Africa and Egypt sound great! The best!!! Do the east cost of Africa - Cairo to Cape Town. That's one of my dream trips! :)
take care! and thanks, as always, for the blog.
