I think the fruit in the picture are pomegranates and are used to make grenadine (grenadine syrup) which is a blood-red, strong syrup used in many alcoholic drinks.

I'm always amazed too at all the people peeing in public and in the middle of crowds instead of around a corner. I'm in agreement, they need more free bathrooms.

I have a question for you Andy. You bought tickets from Bangkok to Chicago and yet you are in Manila right now. I assume you are catching your first flight in Manila and not going to Bankok first. All the airlines always tell me that if you miss the first leg of the flight, that you forfeit the remaining legs. How are you getting around this?

Bala I believe means bullet so maybe they thought you were asking how they killed it rather than if they were going to eat it.
English speaking seems to be better among the females than the males. Since they are all required to learn it in school, I think the women must take it more seriously.
Hey Joe is indeed a leftover from the war. I have been called that many times, sometimes with G.I. in front of it. Some of the youths say, "Whazzz up!" and once a man in his forties came up to me and started singing, "Camptown Races." Like you said, the youth seem more interested in talking than the adults.
Though the shanties look pretty bad on the outside compared to American standards, the ones that I have been inside are neat and well kept. One in a poor section of Manila felt like I was walking into a pile at the local scrapyard but once inside, it was very nicely kept and homey. I'm flying out of the states on the 21rst arriving in Manila on the 23rd. I'll be spending most of my time up near the Baguio City region for the next few weeks. I'm looking forward to spending the time and you are getting me more excited with your writings. Keep on traveling and writing about it.

Your description of the use of cell phones being like pacifiers is right on the money. I've been thinking that for years.
I've always thought it funny that my Filipina wife is so concerned about getting dark by going out in the sun when most Americans would pay lots of money for skin of her color.

I am well beyond expert level then since I know perhaps a hundred or more tagalog words. But then, I am married to a Filipina so I have more reason to learn it than most foreigners.

Having frequented the Philippines, I agree with the assessment that it is the texting capital of the world. I found it funny to watch native Filipinos bracing their arms on the roof of the jeepney so that they can keep on punching in text on their phone above their head despite the bone jarring, pothole lurching ride through the streets and mountains.

Being married to a native of the Philippines (Baguio City), I have made my share of plane trips to the Philippines from the United States. The planes are unbelievably full of American business men heading to Manila to check on their businesses be it a Jollibee franchise or something bigger. If I multiply that out by number of planes arriving from the U.S. per day and other parts of the globe, there is a lot of business men used to modern western comforts looking for a similar place to stay in Manila.

I have a collection of journals that my grandfather and father have written going back over 70 years. My own series of journals goes back ten years. For me, my blog is an extension of the journal for all those things that don't fit neatly within the format. A random collection of thoughts and memories with no theme and no intention of ever publishing.
I read your blog not because it is well written (and it isn't, a fact you have admitted before) but because you take me to places that I have never been. Likewise, I write a blog not because I am a wanabe writer as you suggest but because maybe I can take somebody to a place they have never been.
