The Lebanese came to Africa by accident, they were trying to immigrate to the US, but were re-directed by the French immigration laws. They ended up primarily in West Africa, where they opened rural shops that were very profitable because the British banks provided the Lebanese loans, while they refused to lend to black africans. In some areas, they did so well that they undersold British and French companies (partly because they were able to bargain vs. the British fixed-economy). They probably stayed in Africa because their overheads were small (house upstairs, business downstairs) and they could get their relatives to work for free and set up their own businesses. In other words...$$$$$$.
