Andy,

*OFF TOPIC* I replied to your e-mail five days ago and just got a message today saying it couldn't be delivered.

I wasn't ignoring your e-mail. :) I am posting a comment here in case your e-mail is still having problems.

Thanks,

Brett

Andy,

A blog is what you make it.

Most people's blogs consist of simple or obvious comments on the industries or subjects which interest the authors. Few detail how a person's life or journey is progressing. There just aren't that many people interested in progress. Relevance is much more important to them.

Your blog is unique and you shouldn't question it beyond considering whether it helps you meet your goals.

RSS feeds are a popular way to make blogs accessible, but most people have no idea what they are. The last statistic I read said that only about 19% of Internet users even know what an RSS feed is. Even less people know how to use them.

My favorite blogs are written by experts that have substantive opinions on a particular industry or technology. You fit into this category.

I do wish you had a personal editor :), because you've said a lot of profound things that are probably obscured because of typos or grammar errors. The blogs and pictures on Niger were illuminating.

Keep writing,

Brett

Brett commented about Africa Enslaved by Love, On Sunday September 18th, 2005 11:57:00 AM

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I found them very interesting.

Labeling others poor and suffering gives bored, educated people something to do. The poor become a subject upon which to experiment.

Often times what we call poor is not actually poor, it is just "not prosperous." The spirit of the able-bodied beggar is that "You are prosperous, I am not. You owe me."

I have never been to Niger, so I cannot judge. You can. Here in Phoenix, Arizona, people sneak in from Mexico to get a better life. Without speaking the language or knowing the culture, they prosper. Meanwhile, beggars that are born and raised in Phoenix stand on street corners and beg for money. These men have lived in Phoenix for thirty years and are worse off than people who snuck in five years ago. Why?

For an able-bodied person, clearly the greatest determinant of success is one's own devotion to success. Especially in the United States.

I definitely agree. NGOs seem to be long on idealism and short on effectiveness. I'm just suggesting that to a certain extent, bad lifestyle choices will emerge as wealth increases.

I think wealth and indulgence go hand in hand. You cannot give someone a better life without giving him or her more power to make bad decisions.

I don't think it is whether or not people are pure or impure in action. The question is whether they have the resources and opportunities to express their true natures.

Andy, you've mentioned the NGOs numerous times. Can you comment on what role the government seems to play? I am curious to know.

Thanks,

Brett

Thanks for the layman's view of the world, Andy.

The news media is influenced by many things including ideaology and the need to create drama to attract viewers.

Brett commented about Wireless Access, On Thursday June 9th, 2005 03:27:00 PM

Yes, wireless networks are becoming ubiquitous in the U.S. Many cafes offer them for free. Expect libraries to start doing this too.

As you noticed, many people have them at home too. Some are not secured and it is simple to connect to the Internet thru their access point.
