Ann (MobayDP) commented about Mumbai Massacre, On Tuesday December 2nd, 2008 05:51:00 PM
To be honest, Andy, it's hard for many travelers to fit in and not be noticed. A white person on a bus in Jamaica is not "normal". Everybody on that bus knows immediately that this person is not Jamaican. It would be very normal for a white person to be driving a car in Jamaica and so they wouldn't attract any attention to themselves at all.
It might also be pretty hard for me to go unnoticed in India or China since I don't look anything like the people there.

Interesting that he would make it out of a mosquito net as opposed to cardboard or some other material. I guess it just goes to show how horrid the mosuito problem is!
And yes, it is a sad sight to see this...but you know what? It's reality.

If you post the Thai names of the fruit we can be your little investigators and go Google them to find the English names ;-)
i for one am very curious to know the names of new fruit and veggies. I'd love to know what the fruit in the first picture is. It looks like citrus?

Well, buildings are kind of like women's shoes. Really pretty shoes are always uncomfortable and the really comfortable ones are always ugly. Apparently, in this life, one cannot eat one's cake and then have it too.
It's a really pretty airport though...apparently with hidden cushy chairs! :-)

Have you ever been in a typhoon/hurricane before, Andy? It's serious business man.
It looks like Taiwan took a beating from the storm. I sure hope those showers didn't blow off.
I've seen chattel houses here in Jamaica tied down with strong rope when one of those powerful storms is coming.

I stop by every now and then though I often don't leave a comment. I keep thinking that maybe you're too busy to read comments :)
O.k. so your writing isn't perfect and yes, sometimes it's a little difficult to understand what it is that you're trying to get across. But I must tell you that you have one very interesting, informative and honest blog here, Andy. I like the fact that you don't really sugar coat anything. You write very directly and to the point. You write about real life - something to which we all can relate.
So many of your posts leave me saying, "Hmm...that's interesting. We do that here in Jamaica too" or "wow! I didn't know that."
Anyway, congrats on almost reaching 4,000 posts.I can attest to the fact that 4,000 is a great accomplishment. I got to 368 and stopped!
Blog on Andy.

Baking soda as a mouth wash I meant.
I still believe boiling your water is the best. That and the bleach.

I think all the students in schools here in Jamaica wear uniforms as well. It removes the focus from clothes and I think it is a fantastic idea.
To me it's also so beautiful to see the kids walking in groups along the road going to or coming from school in their uniforms.

Such a beautiful little girl. We have those cashew apples here in Jamaica as well. To be honest, I don't like them at all.
My first introduction to La Antigua Guatemala was at La Antigua Guatemala Daily Photo : http://antiguadailyphoto.com/
Funny enough, as soon as I saw your photo of that little girl I just knew, without even reading the header, that you were in La Antigua Guatemala! :-)

Aaah yes. The mosquito.
Here in Jamaica we have screens on our windows. Doors are kept closed and yet...yet those little pests still find a way in. I'm convinced they come in by way of osmosis through the walls!
Even with my screens I still find I need to have a mosquito net for all the beds in my home.
Of all the creatures in the world I really, really wish mosquitos would become extinct!

That purple vegetable looks like some kind of eggplant (aka garden egg).
In French I think it might be called "aubergine".

It may be hot as all heck in there but it does look like a nice room from the outside. Very clean and neat.
I wonder what the hole above the door is for though...maybe it's just decorative? Or to allow air to come in if you close all the windows and doors?

You would be amazed at how fast these kinds of skin problems spread and then become ridiculously difficult to treat. It is indeed a pity that the baby suffers in the process.
Cultures are interesting things though. The conversation with this baby's mother might have been an interesting one.
Is it that she wants the child to remain in this state so that she can use the child's illness as a means of earning money (alms)? Is it that she is trying to treat the child with bush medicine? Is it that she doesn't have the money to do anything for the child?
It would be an interesting conversation because the child looks otherwise very healthy.
So what did you do to help to solve this particular problem?
Or did you just take the photo and walk away?
BTW : I'm sure you pass Africans everyday who have AIDS. The face of AIDS is changing my friend.

Oh it is sad to see women (and indeed men) in this state.
I often wish I could pick them up and put them back together with a hug and a kiss.
Sadly in Montego Bay many of the street people have become mentally ill becaue of their addiction to drugs and no matter how many times they are dried out they still manage to end up right back on the streets. Those drugs have such a vicious hold on them...impossible to break. :(

Wow. :-D What co-ordination! I kept cringing every time the Pestle came down thinking that he was going to whack her hands off! lol! :)
Cassava and plantains with a pepper tomato sauce. Interesting combination indeed!
Do they use the plantains green or when they are ripe? I'd love to see the finished product - the eating with the tomato-pepper sauce video ;-)
