Wow, pix and all Andy? I am about to begin my own around the world adventure and am considering all of the various ways to update my blog. Seems like it would be hard to update a Blogger blog via phone but you would know better than I.

If you have a Google e-mail account you have Picasa photo hosting - something like 1 Gig for free and incredibly cheap upgrades.
In addition Google will sell you your domain name for only $10 a year, and their Blogger platform can be used as what is basically a 'free' website. So, cheap domain name, cheap photo hosting, free website, place Google ads on the site and maybe that will work.
Hard to do with that African Internet connection you describe.
