  • Hi Andy, I was looking for your email but I couldn't find it so I'll just post here.I've been viewing your site for a while now, and your name came up in a conversation I was having last week with Dick Corner, the American guy living in Guano. I think you stayed with him recently.Anyway, he mentioned your ad subscriptions are proving to be pretty lucrative. I have a blog which I intend to develop into a Travel Resource and have wondered abut ads before.Anyway, maybe you could help me out a little. Where to look, things to read about promoting my site, that kinda stuff.Any help will be much appreciated.Martinrolling_stone_06@yahoo.co.ukhttp://soulchaser.blogspirit.com

  • indeed! TV et al. are not inherantly bad... they are only bad when we get addicted. Like alcohol. I'll sit here with a glass of whiskey sometimes and enjoy it and that's fine. But if I became addicted to alcohol, i'd be in a very dark place that is a whole lot different. I think we can watch TV, listen to the radio, surf the net etc. without getting hooked... without relying on it so much that we would re-shcedule a night out if the VCR didn't work just so as not to miss *insert name of soap here*.of course, i spend longer on the internet than i feel i should. But i'm trying to read more..

  • Fascinating... I'm engaged to a wonderful peruana who explained to me the same idea, using "flichera" instead. When we were in Chiclayo visiting friends (mi familia chiclayana), several of the guys in the plaza made "flichera" comments at her as we were walking along together. She told me about it later, knowing I might have confronted them. Good observations, Andy. Grace to you in your quest for friends.

  • I normally do the layer thing, sweatshirt and light jackets. I normally by the sweatshirt in the USA because they are cheaper and better quality. However I have purchased many funky jackets, and thrown away many jackets. Normal cost is about 10 dollars U.S.A.

  • do you generally take a coat with you when you travel? being a fairly large person i find coats take up a lot of room... And i've only travelled in the UK (where i live) so far. they can be squashed a bit with some effort (i don't wear things like trenchcoats) but i wondered if it's best to buy them on the road or take one?

  • Light, fan, backpack organizer,... I know you have (or had) a bucket, and you have a water boiling coil and a long hasped lock, your alcohol stove, your cooking pans. What am I missing?Me: I always carry a colorful lightweight cotton sleep sheet/hostel bag type thingie. Instant nest, (cleanliness, security, I take my passport, etc. in the bag with me) useful also for laundry bag, curtain, beach blanket.. etc. etc.Talked to someone who won't travel without an aroma candle, since odors get to her.I'm having fun with the article, don't know who'll buy it yet, the budget travel market is slim to nothing.LeslieReaders, if you have ideas like this, feel free to mail me at GrubStreet@postmark.net

  • hmmm you have another reader with my name it seems. How quaint. We have a lot of words flying about over here (UK) about illegal immigration at the moment. Unfortunately, the media got dragged into the election a few weeks ago. Fortunately, that being the case, we still didn't end up with a more conservative or right-wing government. (dang media). It is, of course, a problem, however much pseudo-leftys like me want to harp on about facsism and so on. I suppose the line is "if you have a genuine problem, seek asylum, but don't sneak in through the back door!" ah I really must learn not to talk politics before i go off globe-trotting...We once recieved a similar letter to my school (i was pased it being on student council) and however much I wanted to have compassion and send the guy money, it was obviously a scam. These people are suprisingly good.

  • It tends to be the harder of the options, but I have found that more information will be given in a non-judgemental way if you are honestly looking for work, and tell them that you would like to learn while working.

I am doing a 2 week stint in Europe as an after college graduation vacation. I will be posting to my blog as much as I can during that time. • there is cool train going to the coast from riobamba, which does the devil's ridge or called something like that.... where the train goes down switchbacks by going forward and then backwards down the mountain. never done it myself but wanted to as i spent 3 years there doing relief work around ec. guayaquil is tougher than the highlands so be on your smart. i built a cool little relief house not too awlful far from riobamba, above pujili that was quite an experience... fun country to explore, the highlands and the amazon part as you know.

  • READER SENT EMAIL... wish the would post in comments, so the world can share the advice.Hi I work in the semi-con industry and ship parts around the world. Over the last year we are having trouble with the customs people in the US when we ship with DHL. The only (cynical I know) explanation we have is that DHL are a German based company so customs hold them up, shipments with the US company Fed Ex have been the quickest. Did you get a tracking number for your parcel? MartynMY ANSWERHello,I have a parcel tracking number.I am not worried about quick, and I do not trust Fed Ex as I am in the dodgy countries, they are not, I need the package to arrive, and quick is not the solution.Did not know they was German... heheheAndy of HoboTraveler.com
