About Syncro Safaris Motorcycle Tours

Africa will always be our first love at Syncro Safaris and once you have experienced the continent on a bike, life will never quite be the same again! Its a tour for adventure and travel enthusiasts looking for the ultimate challenge and adventure.

This unique tour and travel Company is offering motorcycle tours from Kenya to destinations in East Africa. With over 8 years experience on motorcycling in Kenya and 5 years running group organized tours as a club.The owner of Syncro Safaris rides along and is involved in planning tours to a number of interesting destinations in Kenya. So far we have over twenty destinations covered locally as shown in the summary and pictures.

Often riders based in Nairobi own bikes and wish to tour in the region but have not been able to plan it on their own and prefer to ride in a group.

How our tours are Planned

Many people are put off because they think its so hard, and there is so much you need to know, so much planning and preparation, that they get bogged down in the morass of information they THINK they need, and never do it, because it just seems too hard.

The truth is its actually pretty easy - anyone reading this, with a valid motorcycle licence, can get on it and ride around East Africa. Its BEEN DONE! We know people who got their licences weeks before leaving, and made it all the way . Tiny women, grandmothers and grandfathers, pensioners,fresh out of school kids, all have done it.

Bikes we ride are predominantly dual purpose touring motorcycles BMW GS 650 to 1200 cc KTM 640 or 990, Honda Africa Twin and other related type generally over 400 cc . Emphasis is on reliability not speed or off-road ability.

Most of the rides are on tarmac roads but a fair amount of dirt all weather roads are included. Rides can be Tailored to suit a group intending to come to Kenya or through Kenya and intend to spend time here.

We will assist anyone who wishes to tour but does not have a bike and prefers to hire one just for the trip. In most cases a trip with us may be a reconnaissance for a longer trip later.

Also in certain areas when we set off, we can split to different directions (unless it is a remote location) and can meet up later in the day.

Back-Up Vehicle Support to Riders -

A back up vehicle usually 4 wd with a motorcycle trailer drives along for the long adventure rides for various reasons
-Due to the inherent dangers of bike travel and the unavailability of medical facilities in most of the countries we travel in, a support vehicle is a comforting addition. However this does not in any way preclude or guarantee safety, clients must take extra care on rides and have medical insurance (more)
-Most of the tours will be self sustaining meaning we carry tents, sleeping bags, We cook our own food and carry water etc.This way we are independent, stop when and where we want.
-Flexibility comes with having our own supplies we can do more and dont have to head to a hotel or lodge at the end of the day, more often we will simply find a safe place to set up camp.
- Also if and when we inevitably need a vehicle to drive into a park or conservation area that wont allow bikes we have a readily available vehicle.
-In case of bike breakdown it can be loaded onto a trailer vs hiring a local dude and damaging bike..... very expensive
- Finally..... so as to convince the missis this is a safe way to let hubby relax and be away from home unsupervised

The tours mentioned are in two broad categories

Local Runs-(SSK 036-040) On these rides asphalt roads but a fair amount of dirt all weather roads are included. These rides are ideal for those who are unable to get more than a week off work.They range from 1 day tours to 4-5 days.They often do not have a support vehicle.Minimum number required for ride is 2 riders i.e. besides the tour leader

Adventures-(SSK 041-051) These are fixed adventure tours will be planned per year, these trip due to their duration or level of planning will require booking in advance and depending on the number cost will depend on the number.Rides can be Tailored to suit a group intending to come to Kenya or through Kenya and intend to spend more time in the region.These rides will cover long distances and be over 5 or more days in duration. They will involve cross frontier or cross border travel in most cases.A minimum number of 6 riders are required for these rides to run.

SSK 0364 Lake Magadi all tar exceptional ride to open up your engine.
SSK 0365 Ewaso Kedong 90 semi off road, a true adventure ride down the escarpment.
SSK 0366 Hells Gate National Park one of only two parks allowing bikes in Kenya.

- Services of a trained and experienced English speaking guide
- Fullboard accommodation in the lodges or camp as mentioned
- Game walks and all related fees

NB In Africa things change fast borders close, visas are refused for unknown reasons and routes become impassable. Although we will strive to overcome all obstacles the organisers reserve the right to alter the routes from the ones listed above.

What You Must Bring

All personal protective riding clothes (trousers and jacket)
Helmet (full face essential)
Boots (MX type essential for African expeditions)
Gloves
Personal non-riding clothing
GPS - not essential but highly recommended
Sleeping equipment
Personal camping equipment (for example torch and personal 1st aid kit)
Comprehensive travel insurance which includes full medical cover with repatriation.

Why its different on a bike

Advantages (+) and Disadvantages (-)Vs. Car

+ Cheaper to operate - in most of the world a litre of feul is US$ 1.5 or more.
+ Cheaper to transport over oceans or impassable areas of land - you can put it on a trailer
+ For continents (such as Africa) where a carnet is needed, much smaller deposit is required because a bike is generally cheaper than a car and certainly cheaper than a 4WD.
+ Perceived as more accessible and less rich western tourist to locals in third world - they identify with a motorcycle as a cheaper form of transport and are much friendlier as a result.
+ Maintenance is generally much easier than with a car
+ The feeling of complete freedom (hard to explain to non-motorcyclists)
+ Twisty roads are fun!
+ Conversation starter, especially if you plaster your boxes with country flags and world map with your route. Note: everyone loves to see their own countrys flag.
+ Closer to the environment - this can be positive or negative depending on the environment , but usually positive.
+ On truly bad roads, easier to avoid potholes and other hazards (including buses passing slow trucks on blind curves coming your way).
+ Easier to find safe motorcycle parking than car parking - try driving your car into the hotel lobby and parking it in front of the reception desk!

And on the negative side:

- You get wet when it rains.
- You cant sleep in it.
- Not as good a view for the passenger.
- No air conditioning or heater (electric vest is a good substitute for a heater).
- Cant go places that a 4WD can go(e.g. game parks in Africa are all convinced that lions will jump out of trees onto your motorcycle and they WILL NOT let you into the park with it).
- Less stable when crossing flooded roads!

Vs. Public Transport

+ Flexibility - you decide when and where you want to go - except in deep sand or mud
+ Safer than buses or taxis in the third world - at least you know the driver has a license!
+ Security for belongings

But:

- More expensive than buses
Vs. Bicycle
+ Considerably faster - can see much more in less time.
+ When being stoned by locals in some parts you can get away more quickly! (This also applies if being chased by lions in Africa - an infrequent occurrence).
