Hello!! I dont agree with most of the coments that amber told. Im an argentian, so I can tell you that most things are not as she told.

First: Maybe not everybody speaks english here, thats a fact, we dont suppose to. But a lot of people do. So if you need anything dont be shy, and ask. Im sure that someone will be happy to help you! (as me, i work in the microcentro(-city centre) and i helped lots of lost travelers... and without asking anything!!! ) You dont need to go to some sort of english school or something.. just ask... in the street, in the restaurants, at shops... youll find someone to help you!!

Second: Yes, in argentina are robbers... But also in France, Spain and USA. You should be careful, and take care about your personal stuff and things.

Third: If youre not very sure how to get somewhere, just ask! Taxi is the safer way to get wherever you wanna go. Its not that expensive, but it will be more expensive than taking a subway or a bus.
Taking the subway it a safe way to get to any place. But notice that B.A. is very big and you cannot go to all the places on subway/metro (in Argentina is called: Subte)
Buses are cheap, nowdays they cost 1.25 the trip.

fourth: Eating is very cheap, the best places to eat in a cheap way are located in the heart of the city (microcentro): Pronto Pizza: slices for $3 (less than a dollar!), mc donalds (everywhere!), cafes, little restaurants (they have menus from $12 with food+soda.)

If you wanna eat delicious food: excelent meat or fresh fish go to puerto madero! if you want less expensive prices go for the lunch!!! there are menus for $35.

EL COLECTICO/THE BUS - when getting on the bus in buenos aires, if you are only travelling around the city - do not say anything other than -ochenta- to the bus driver (which means 80, which is how many pesos you will put in the machine behind the bus driver when you get on), and keep an eye out for where you are going. do not wave down a bus - they dont stop for you. however, DO ensure you are standing in the right place for the right bus.

ACCOMODATION - apartments are the cheapest and most exciting way to stay in buenos aires if you are staying more than a week. you dont meet as many travellers, but there are many good, SAFE apartments in the core of the city - where you will no doubt spend most of your time anyway. i know of many cheap apartments under US$150 a week - email me. COURTESY - don-t look at the homeless. if you are a woman - don-t make eye contact with the men - they will think you want them in bed.

EMERGENCY - dont go to the police alone if you dont know the language - go to a spanish school and ask for someone to accompany you. Offer 50 pesos (about US$17) if you can afford it, as they will understand your english (or other native language) and help you communicate with the police. (ECELA is one in the city - to ask for it, ask a shop keeper -sabes donde esta la escuela se llama -ECELA- ? - - hopefully they will be able to show you on a map).

THINGS TO SEE - you MUST see the recoleta cemetery in buenos aires. it is a sight not to be missed and it is highly likely you will never see anything like it. there are open coffins, underground family churches and giant angelic statues.

FOOD - dulce de leche is the greatest thing about argentina...ohhhhhhhhhhh lord. try the dulce de leche ice cream [helado] for a taste of heaven.

DRESS - you should be fine with whatever you wear - however bear in mind, if you are a woman - avoid low cut tops and short skirts/shorts. the men will stare and it is highly likely they will try to kiss you, or follow you. be warned.
