Welcome to Volunteering to Learn, Nepal! Volunteering to Learn, Nepal (Govt Reg. No: 301 and Social Welfare Council - Nepal Reg. No: 28330)is a not-for-profit and non-governmental organization working in the field of Education, Health, Women Empowerment and Gender Issues, Children’s Rights, Environment, Ecology, Sustainable Agriculture, Community Development, Sustainable Development and Livelihoods through mobilizing volunteers. It aims to provide the interested volunteers immense opportunities to experience multi-aspects of Nepal, i.e. culture, geography, history, economy, society, environment, natural resources, flora and fauna, ecology, organic and sustainable agriculture, way of living particularly rural and so on.
We do believe that the only way to learn and understand any society and area is through the deep exploration and immersion into these things. Volunteering is a two-way approach and contribution for the better understanding, harmony and mutual assistance and benefits. Volunteering to Learn, Nepal is committed to provide sound platforms to the interested people to utilize their expertise in various fields and make significant contribution to the Nepalese communities. Simultaneously, volunteers are expected to gain broader perspectives on several issues through first-hand involvement and contribution.
So far, we have served the interests of more than one hundred volunteers from various countries.

Umpalazi: Community and Wildlife Project
http://www.umpalazi.org
Greytown (Umvoti) - KwaZulu-Natal - South Africa
2008-12-04 19:10:49
The Umpalazi: Community and Wildlife Project incorporates local community upliftment, including skills training, environmental education and aid work with the rehabilitation of injured and/or orphaned wildlife for future release and monitoring. Umpalazi also provides sanctuary for other displaced animals. Volunteers are needed to keep this project going.
The Umpalazi: Community and Wildlife Project, set on a breathtaking 7,000 acre property in the South African bush, endeavors to provide skills training for local rural Zulu community members. This is carried out with the help of international volunteers who help train the selected local community members, whilst transforming Umpalazis facilities as a wildlife sanctuary. (The number of local Zulu people hired depends on the number of international volunteers due to limited funds).
The aim is not only to create jobs to help improve the standard of living and the lives of local rural people, but also to provide long-term community upliftment. Skills training will create a positive ripple effect throughout the whole community, as the individuals involved thus have the opportunity to build on their skills, providing an income and/or the ability to teach others.
Furthermore, Umpalazi does not have access to electricity therefore it does, and will provide for a more environmentally friendly way of living. Funds permitting, solar and gas facilities and a generator will be installed, supplying what little electricity is necessary.
This will be a joint project with the Animal Protection and Environmental Sanctuary (A.P.E.S.) as co-founders, Dawn Magowan and Rodney Pendleton, will be moving to Umpalazi with their sanctuary to provide their wildlife with a better release site and to immediately get volunteers involved with wildlife conservation. APES focuses on the rehabilitation of primates (primarily the South African Vervet Monkey - Cercopithecus aethiops) and other wildlife.
Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to work closely with South African wildlife, primarily the South African Vervet Monkey. Volunteers will have a direct and positive impact on the conservation of wildlife and the environment through snare/trap clearinggame counts bird watching invasive weed removal and other environmental management activities. There are also opportunities to live with a Zulu family (for a day etc.), and visit other attractions in KwaZulu-Natal (i.e. CROW, Game Reserves, St.Lucia Wetlands etc.)
The Umpalazi: Community and Wildlife Project relies on volunteer fees to survive, thus without them, there would be no project. Therefore if you volunteer at Umpalazi, you are directly conserving South Africas wildlife (particulary vervet monkeys) and environment. Numerous orphaned and injured vervet monkeys are rehabililtated at APES (project partner) and, thus Umpalazi, and as a volunteer you will provide the resources and help to give these beings a chance at a better life.
The local Zulu community also benefit greatly via employment, skills training (an upcoming project, again depending on the number of volunteers due to limited funds), environmental education and aid work.

14 FALLS , WATER FALLS NEAR MY VILLAGE,
Around 60 kms out of Nairobi is Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park centred around an imposing 2,146 metre mountain. The local Mkamba name for this peak is Kilimambogo, or "Buffalo Mountain", an appropriate name given the large population of Mbogo (Buffalo) that live in the surrounding montane forest and plainland. The park is also a refuge for colobus monkeys, bushbuck, duiker, leopard and numerous bird species.
Just outside the park, the waters of the Tana river cascade 27 metres down through a series of spectacular cataracts, forming the "14 falls".
transport to this beautifull water falls is by matatu or by taxi can be organized on request,
WOODCARVING FACTORIES IN WAMUNYU
The Kamba are nowadays most famous for their African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) carvings, although this is actually a very recent art form: the Kamba were introduced to the techniques of wood sculpture by Mutisya Munge, who had served in the colonial Carrier Corps in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) during World War I. There, he came into contact with Zaramo carvers, who had themselves been influenced by the Makonde .Munge collected Zaramo models, and on returning to Kenya took up carving as a full-time occupation.
Following Munge-s efforts, a booming trade in carvings developed at the small town of Wamunyu, along the road from Machakos to Kitui, as evidenced nowadays by a welter of self-help and co-operative carvers- societies and their shops. Here, some 3000 people - many of them children - eke out a living with wood carving.
Anyone who has been to Kenya will undoubtedly have come across the miniature carvings of elephants and antelopes, lions, reptiles and birds, as well as the necklace pendants embellished by coiled wire, which are sold in hotel gift shops and tourist stalls throughout the country. No matter where you see or buy them, chances are that they will have been made by the Kamba - even the life-size Maasai warriors, which I once saw a German couple carting through Nairobi-s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on the way to the check-in desk.
These animal and human figures are far from traditional, but most the remunerative for the carvers. Spoons and ladles are an exception, as are the three-legged stools, often beautifully inlaid with wire coils.
the tour to wamunyu wood factories can be done by matatu or taxi from my farm/home on request,
