THE JOURNEY
Coming from and going to…

I Left Bangkok went to the Philippines, then onto the USA to share Christmas
with my family, the first time in nine years. I avoid both Christmas and winter,
I like the tropical weather close to the equator.

I am presently in Bogotá, Colombia visiting a travel expert friend German
in the Platypus Bogotá Hostel, we will discuss the ins and outs of the travel
world, thenI will go to Trinidad to meet up with Craig… at least I hope I do,
he has a web site called
http://www.travelvice.com

Robert the Prudent Traveler is down in Brazil somewhere, I will do my best
to avoid the temptation to go to Rio and look at the world class Bikinis with
Craig or Robert as they migrate towards Brazil Carnival.
http://www.prudenttravel.com

I am enjoying the many readers that are off and about and learning the tricks
of how to have a web page and live on the road, us modern day Hobos.
I am hoping many Hobos venture outside the resort and run away,
escape… and come visit.

I will go NORTH from Trinidad to many Caribbean Islands.

A blog map of the present wanderings.
http://www.hobotraveler.com/2006/01/map-of-caribbean-trip.html

I am trying to send this letter quickly as I have been procrastinating;
I will next send my choices for Top Travel Sites of 2005 list in
newsletter 188 in a couple of days.

ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES

Hey Joe!
- The Philippines -
A common attempt hawked by the locals in an attempt to slow my
walk down in the streets of Manila and listen to some noise that feels
to that is it is not in my best interest…in the country called
the “Philippines.”

If it feels like a hustler, talk like hustlers, walks like a hustlers,
then you are on the other side of the planet.

Every story has a plot, however for sure I sometime lose the plot,
I happened upon a drawing that lead to a book, that lead to the
story, where I found the plot, I discovered the answers to questions
I did not know to ask. The life of a traveler.

- …an adventure of one man who is fortunate enough to experience
life’s various and facets and write about it. It’s about one man who
man who is brave enough to plunge himself with deliberateness into
chaos because for him life is more interesting that way. -

A quote from the book Hey Joe by Ted Lerner about life in the Philippines.

THE PHOTOGRAPH BLOCK

I am in Bogotá, Colombia, mixed up, confused and still searching for a path;
I have stumbled off the path and back onto to the path. I have been
searching my soul, trying to learn enough about myself to know why I
am not writing newsletters and sending to you good folks all around the
planet. I hope I have discovered the problem, I have photograph block,
sort of like writers block with a twist. The modern world has created a
digital camera; this camera slowly has improved to a state where I can
literally take 20-100 photos per day of my world.

Taking the photos is easy, making them into WebPages takes hours,
I am working on a solution, and however I will try to do better.

Note: The blog is taking up a lot of writing energy, plus I am lazy, I like to
only work two hours per day.

The Philippines is wonderful for me, I like the place in a sort of debauchery
type way, full of anything and everything you want, a few saints and
many sinners, many Expats telling you stories about how they will make a
million or lost a million. I notice for the most part they support the beer
industry the best.

I made it to Palawan Island, a long strip of land in the middle of the ocean
and both primitive and modern. It is in many ways the perfect place for a
person to retire and live in peace, however just around the corners always
from chaos. A person needs to keep an open mind, as Asia in general
will surprise the naïve person who believes all persons are good if they
just had a chance.

CHRISTMAS IN THE STATES

The world calls the USA - The States - this is not my way, however it is
starting to become my way of thinking, I am losing my culture and it was
good to return to the safe, clean, and way too busy USA. I do not think I
could ever live in the USA permanently, or Europe, they are just too
busy and are missing the life of sitting around, just looking, doing nothing,
with no money like the rest of the world. Those on the outside of the
USA want in, and for many in the Western World they want out.
The world is a big place getting smaller.

Off to Trinidad and Tobago in a few days, I will send the most useful
pages for a true traveler or the Top Travel Sites of 2005 in a few days.

~ TODAY’S TRAVEL TIPS - Back to top

The Travelers Nest
- Portable Home -
How to bring your home with you.

“I want to live in a 5 STAR Hotel on 5 dollars per day.”

The Art of Travel is not your insane ability to manage or handle the many
tortures of travel. The 35-hour bus trips, the person that will not sell you rice
because you cannot speak his language. There is poverty, beggar’s dirt,
crime, and people with the manners of cows.

The Art of Travel is having all the comforts of home; yet travel daily to another
city, a new world each day, that is nothing like where you live.

Trust me; if you drink a beer every night after work, you are going to need a
beer every night while you travel. This is not a want, it is a need, and it is what?
your nest has inside it, which makes it your home.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Did you know...
There exist travelers or tourist that are able to do amazing acrobatics and
body contortions. They will travel for months and never touch the toilet seat in a hotel.

“What do I need?”
“What do I need to be happy?”
“What are the minimums?”
“What is essential?”

THE FIVE STAR HOTEL SOLUTION

This is an easy solution and for many persons and for many it is truly the only solution.
They need to live in nest that is nicer than their home. This is a perfect
solution for a Vacation or Holiday where you are on the 100-200 U.S.
Dollars per day budget. However, for the one-year trip, not realistic.

100-200 Dollars per day.
20 DOLLARS PER DAY BUDGET
10 Dollars per day budget.
5 Dollars per day budget.

What do I want?
I want to live in a FIVE STAR Hotel on 5 dollars per day.

EXAMPLES

Philippines:

I spent a couple of weeks in the city of Manila in the Philippines, the Hostel
was great. Nice people, good conversation, a private room, a real home
away from home. However, I noticed there were a couple of problems.
The reception men were not good at cleaning, however because the place
was a modern apartment this was not immediately obvious. There was a
common restroom used by the residents, this was an Apartment on the
fourth floor converted to a Hostel.

This shower or “Comfort Room” as they call it in the Philippines was not clean,
or not clean enough for me, so I thought to myself. I am going to live here for a
couple of weeks.

I will clean the restroom.

I went to the store purchased scouring powder, a brush, a toilet brush and all
the cleaning supplies needed to make this room like home. Then proceeded
to make a fool of myself, cleaned the shower and received no thanks from
anyone. However, the room was now 10 times better than before and I was
wondering to myself.

“Who is the fool, me who makes my life good, or those who will live like
a pig and will not change their world?”

In the kitchen, they had free coffee; however, the spoons were large spoons,
an impossible size to stir my instant coffee. I went to the Robinson Mall,
purchased some small spoons, afterwards I was able to make the free
instant coffee provided by the Hostel with the proper spoon.

Cost: Less than 7 U.S. Dollars.

Cuzco, Peru Hotel

There was a nice kitchen; however, the door leading to the outside had no
handle. There was no trash bin inside the kitchen for the trash.
I needed to open this large door. However, there was literally no way to grab
the door to pull it open. I went to the market, found a Hardware and purchased
a Handle. At the time, they were doing some construction on other rooms,
so I borrowed some tools and installed the handle. I was now able to remove
a daily annoyance and to make this nest my home.

MEXICO:

I lived on a nice beach north of Acapulco; I paid a cleaning person 5 dollars
to clean my room weekly. The room went from ok to great, for 5 dollars per week.

I can tell you many stories and if you have read my tips, they are trying to tell you
how to lesson the pains of travel.

MISCELLANEOUS:

I carry a light in my bag to read, I have a hot plate to heat the rooms when too cold.

I have a backpack organizer so I have a closet in my room. I use a dog chain to
lock my backpack to the table or bed in the room so I feel safe like home.

I have a small hammock I use as a blanket; I have a mirror in my bag so I can
see myself to comb my hair. The list is long and varied, however for you to
enjoy you trip you must stop.

I buy bug spray to stop the insects.

I have my own spatula to turn my eggs.

I have one-cup coffee cooker and a bucket in my bag to boil water for coffee, to do
a dip shower or to disinfect my clothes in boiling water.

Stop pretending you have what you need.

Accept you can only afford to pay on 5-10-20 U.S. dollars per day; however,
you really are not happy, you feel uncomfortable.

Then make the decision…
“I will pay to clean or buy what I need to be happy.”

When you stop believing the Hotel should provide you towel, soap,
spatula and take responsibility for yourself.

You may call yourself,
“A traveler”

Next time you enter you Hotel room, ask yourself,
“What do I need to buy, what needs to be done, how does this place need to be changed?”

How can I make this nest my home?

For as little as 2 Dollars U.S.A. per day you can upgrade a few stars.

Warning:
Do not tell the Hotel you are changing their Hotel, I have found
they consider this an insult, they will not appreciate your ideas.

Life is good.
Have fun! Life is Good!

As always, these are suggestions. Please realize I am
giving guidance, and there are always other opinions.
“One mans paradise, is another mans hell”
This way we do not all go to the same place.
