CHANGES IN LONGITUDE

I am going to move time zones again, more jet lag and adjustments to
my body’s time clock. My friend Mary wrote me from Arequipa, Peru,
she works for a copper mine there as an English teacher, well it seem
that she and her partner have lost their contract and will soon be
unemployed. I met Mary a long time ago when I stopped in Arequipa and
taught English for a couple of months. Not my favorite job, however
I made some good friends in Arequipa.

Mary and I have been talking by email, and I want to start another
Hostel in Peru. I started one Hostel in Iquitos, and it did very well,
but now the owner is off and doing something totally different. Some
of you remember my Hobohideout.com information from a few years ago,
so I am back at it. I will go soon to start a Hostel in Arequipa, Peru
with Mary. Check this link for all the noise.

KOH PHI PHI THAILAND

I book a bus with my friend Andrew to Phuket, and the bus took us the
long way to Surathani, so suddenly we needed to pass Krabi, Thailand.
Well, I think Krabi Thailand or Railay Beach is probably the most beautiful
beach in Thailand. Not my favorite, as Koh Pha Ngan is still my favorite,
but Krabi is extremely beautiful with its limestone columns and great
cave like looks.

So I said to Andrew,
“This is like taking you by the best place in Thailand and not stopping,
this is crazy, we need to stop.”

We stopped, and looked at Ao Nang and stayed a night on Railay beach
both right at Krabi Town Thailand. This whole area is ok and not damage.

We then or at least I was trying to drag Andrew to Koh Phi Phi by boat,
and then take another boat to Phuket to make a great trip. The normal
tourist boat to Koh Phi Phi was not working so we were lucky and took
a free government boat to Koh Phi Phi for the say.

KOH PHI PHI 70 PERCENT DESTROYED

We left the slightly damaged areas of Railay and Ao Nang and go to
Koh Phi Phi. Destruction is everywhere, the only building that remained
were the concrete structures. All the cheapie wood building are gone,
so no more cheap lodging in Koh Phi Phi. This island has a small strip
of land that separates two bays, and as best I can tell the wave met
coming from both sides. I am sure many people died on the island but
I have no statistics. This place was sad in many ways, a complete mess
even after one month of work. There is no reason to visit this island
for at least another six months. However, you can always go to Krabi,
Railay, and Ao Nang very close and if Koh Phi Phi is open, you can
go visit or go and check it out. Railay is in my opinion the most beautiful
spot in Thailand and only an hour away from Koh Phi Phi by boat, so
just a hop.

Andrew and I took many photos above and there are two animated gifs
that look like films after they are downloaded. I learned two major
solutions in the last couple of weeks. How to make big pictures small
for the internet and how to put a movie on the internet, so the future
has more pictures.

TSUNAMI SOLUTIONS

Bottom line is a Tsunami is a big wave, the waves come in and the waves
go out and it returns to normal. Nevertheless, the wave leaves everything
destroyed or killed. Nonetheless, the coast returns to status quo quickly,
but anything MAN-MADE has a problem; anything that the good Gods made
had no problem.

Everything that was built high on the side of hills survived the Tsunami
with no problems on Koh Phi Phi, as the wave was below them.

The human monkey goes and builds a home, business, try to tame the
planet and the planet earth is excessively powerful. I suppose we will
keep hearing word like…

Earthquake Proof
Tsunami Safe
Early Warning Systems
Hurricane Proof
Tornado Proof
Flood Proof
Etc and I am sure the good Gods have more powers.

I seem many tribal or poor people building small huts in dry riverbeds,
a place where there is only a river every 20 years. Then a big rainstorm
comes and washes them away.

The solution is Zoning Laws…. A zoning law in the USA gives permissions
to where and how you can build. Now the law is for sale in 90 percent
of the world so that is a joke, but the United Nations could push this
issue. Just like the United Nations could push, coerce, prod, and push
countries to make retirement money for old people. I suppose 80 percent
of the planet works until they die, this is the reason they all have
many babies, to support them when they are old.

So, is there a solution to the Tsunami?
NO, trying to stop Earthquakes and big waves is impossible.
What can a person do?
Hope they are not in the wrong place at the wrong time and learn to
swim. Very few Asian people know how to swim.

Government can create early warning systems for the above list of the
powers of the good Gods, and then hopefully the government can force
people to listen.

There is a myth that if you live in an expensive hotel you will be
safe. There is this idea that if I pay a lot of money, then I will be safe.

GONG
Remember the gong show, you are dead. You lose.

You cannot pay yourself to safety; you must keep them monkey senses
intact, and be aware of danger around you, then be ready to protect
yourself. Yes, 90 percent of the time, your guide will protect you
because there is no problem, but can your guide protect you when there
is a problem. Did you pay enough, money is not the solution.

SOLUTION
1. Remember the world is dangerous.
2. Know an escape route.
3. Know what is dangerous.
4. Sacrifice money for safety.

DOLPHINS IN TSUNAMI
I had a person ask me or want to know what the animals did before the
wave. The only information I heard was that the dolphins that you almost
never see in Thailand suddenly started to jump, and then they swam
together in a weird way like they were mating, in groups of three,
rolling over in the water. Now if you can remember that…get a life.

HOW TO HELP THE TSUNAMI PEOPLE?
You can only help the survivors.
Be a tourist, come to Thailand, the wave is gone.

There are an over abundance of rooms and the prices are cheaper. Come
and spend money before a wave of poverty comes when there is no tourist
dollars next year.

WHAT IS DANGEROUS WHEN TRAVELING?
You have about as much chance of being caught in a Tsunami as you have
of being hit by lightning.

HERE is what is REALLY DANGEROUS for tourist?

1. Being hit by cars.
2. Having sex with the locals.
3. Walking home very drunk after midnight.
4. Walking through groups of drunk people.
5. Tours, with bad guides. That is the job of a guide to protect you.
6. Getting involved with religious concerns.
7. Getting involved in political causes.
8 . Complaining or talking to the police.
9. Electricity in showers.
10. Military coup situations / or demonstrations.

I have been to some dangerous places, but I decide what is safe and
not safe in life, I do not delegate this responsibility and I do not
trust a guide, and the more I pay the more dangerous it becomes. If
all else fails, follow a local, they do not do walk into danger.

ANDREW VISITED ME IN THAILAND

My friend and college Andrew came from India to talk about internet
pages. We spent the last two weeks making plans about Hobo internet
pages. I learned a lot from him and we sort of got the web cam running
on Khao San Road. I am not yet happy, but there is a camera on the road.

Life is an adventure, go live it, do not be afraid, you will die for
sure, but the time and place is not your choice, have the faith in

LENGTH OF VISA

Always ask for the maximum allowed time!
Why?

In the worst case this tip is about…

HOW TO GO TO JAIL IN ANOTHER COUNTRY?

I go to a country, I stay a month, two month, then I leave the country.
The country gives me permission or visa to enter the country. The amount
of time allowed and the cost changes for every country, plus it depends
on which country you are from, this means the rules always change.

Example:

As an USA citizen I can enter Thailand for 30 day at no cost.
As an Indian Citizen my Techie from India paid 1000 Baht or about 25
USA Dollars for 30 days.

THAT’S NOT FAIR

Why does a person from a poorer country have to pay more than from
a richer country? The simple answer is they do not always go home,
while the richer country goes home. People from poorer countries enter
the rich countries and never leave.

FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION

There is nothing fair about entering a country, the country is not
trying to protect your rights, they are trying to protect their country
from any problem you could make while living inside their country.
So they make a Visa Application, on this form are lots of simple questions,
most of them you will be able to answer very easily, but some are difficult,
and for the tough visa countries like Russia they are ridiculously
difficult to complete. Russia wants you to tell them where you will
stay and when you will be there for the complete vacation, I am not
sure I would call that a vacation.

Most countries however allow you to enter and live freely, nonetheless
there are two questions that baffle a backpackers and makes them feel
guilty. They want to answer honestly but the honest answer will cause
you problems.

HOW LONG OF VISIT?
1. How long will you stay in the country? Maybe they say length of
visit, or length of Visa needed, or somehow they want to know the time in the country.

NAME OF HOTEL?
2. Where will you stay? What is your destination, or what is the hotel
you will be staying in? (Normally I write the city name, not the hotel,
or pick any hotel from the guidebook I think is possible and write
it down.)

These are difficult questions for me, and normally I have no idea as
I do not plan either one of them, I get off the plane with no hotel
and no time limits, I am in the country to visit until I want to leave.

These are serious questions, and the country has the right, the duty,
and the obligation to the world and itself to control where you are
traveling. Especially if you are a terrorist, I know you are not a
terrorist, but you could be one, therefore empathize with the country
for at least one second and try to understand, they have an obligation
and duty to protect their country from the invasion of other countries.

This TIP is about the length of stay question and started because I
am sitting around worrying if my friend from India made it home ok.
He came to visit me from India in Thailand on a 30 day Visa permission
from Thailand government. This cost him 1000 Baht. However when we
are talking the next day he says he has to change his plane ticket
because the stamp on his visa is only until the 27th and he is staying
until the 29th.

I have been thinking about this problem now for the last 14 days not
real worried because I have left Thailand on purpose late and paid
their late fee of 200 Baht per day. The system works well and the Thai
government does not appear to be trying to get bribes at the airport.
I would not do this at a land border crossing as I think I could be
sitting in the office of the border for hours coughing up cash to convince
them to let me go, but the airport is not a good place for corrupt
officials to make extra cash. Nonetheless being an illegal alien is
risky business, and although it sounds like a great way to go to jail,
if you are trying to leave it a more likely a great way for the border
control or police to make money.

The love to find you late, this is their pay day!

I am from the USA, my friend is from India!
Major difference in Visa problems. The USA, England, Germany, Australia,
New Zealand are the get away with anything countries and it goes down
from there, if you are from the other countries of the world you may
have to beg. But that is more or less the express visa countries of
the planet, we can go anywhere easily.

The poorer the country, the more difficult the visa.
I will explain why the countries allow us to do as we wish in the words
of Jim Croce singer.
“Don’t tug on superman cape?”
A person from a richer country entering a poorer country is going down
the food chain. Like a lion talking to a lamb, but if you are a lamb
entering the home of the lion than life can be difficult.

But there is one question you answer correctly.

EXAMPLE:

How long are you staying?

Now, you know you are staying until the 29th of January, but that is
not the question they are asking how long you are staying, not when
is you will leave the country. So you can stand in this long queue
or line trying to calculate the time.

My answer is normally 90 days, or double the time I want to stay. In
corrupt countries like Mexico they will always cut the time in half
to give their officials time to make a good bribe. These people like
having power, they want a way to jack your around. Therefore if they
you are in negotiations with the country on how long you can stay,
but maybe you are not in negotiations, but they want you to leave when
you say you are leaving.

ONWARD TICKETS

The often say, onward plane ticket needed to enter the country. I have
never had to have this to enter a country, but I am from a Superman
country and they want me stay forever spending my dollars, but I am
sure there are countries where this is required. It is a rule and I
try to obey, it could be a bribe if I do not obey.

HONEST OFFICIALS AND HONEST MISTAKES

You walk up to the booth, the man or woman behind the control point
ask you,
“How long will you stay in the country?”
You answer,
“16 days.”

He or she is sitting there, they have a huge line behind them, they
try to add up the days and determine the date of you leaving. There
job is to make you leave as quickly as possible, and not let roam around
freely. Therefore because you told them 16 days, they listen and start to think.

Hmm…
Today is the 7th of January.
You stay 16 days.
Let me think that is the about 20 days so maybe the 27th is good.
They are not mathematicians behind the counter. Most countries add
in their head and do not seem to believe in calculators.

A good country will just give you the maximum allowed.
A bad country or bad person will make a dangerous decision that could
allow them to get a bribe, they will stamp a number on the visa and
say good bye.

This is what happened with my friend. I was not there and really do
not know what happened. His Visa was stamped for the 27th but he was
leaving on the 29th. He did not stop and get in the argument, he did
not solve the problem as it happened, he just left and the problem continued

This is a great way for a country to make extra money, this is a great
way to get a bribe. Thailand is doing better on the bribe situation
and life is getting less full of bribes, but most of the world is full
of corruption at the border.

So when they ask how long you stay?
Keep it simple.
Say the maximum amount of days.
Or double the time you need.
Do NOT be exact or you could be two cards short of a deck of card,
maybe a dollar short and day late.

An ILLEGAL ALIEN!

As always, these are suggestions. Please realize I am
giving guidance, and there are always other opinions.

INTRODUCTION
I wrote a comment in the prior newsletter that I would not
put money in a box on Khao San Road. Zero I said because
it is collected by the police. My recommendation was to
give blood, the Red Cross maybe or better yet, come
to Thailand or Asia and spend money. I received a series
of emails from "Frank."

FRANK SAID

Why Is the Sunset Bar posted?

They gave an cheque over 24.061 Baht to the police. This money was
collected from the bar with customers, stuff and the management. So
the cheque was put on the box because the cheque is still in the hand
of the officer in charge, Pol. Col. Wirichan, the chief of the Chanasongkram
police station.
Some more informations for you:
The money goes really to the red cross and there the correct way. The
only money that was used from this donation is 13.200 Baht for toner
for an colour laser printer, around 1000 Baht for condolence books
which are since a while there. The sticky tapes and and paper and all
other needed things are free from the police. Because of this action
there was already some people alive identified. This police station
made for searching people already at least 500 phone calls around the
world and tried to find for relatives informations about their kids, parents, etc.

One thing is fact: This money is holy money and everbody who touch
this money for a other reason as to help the tsunami victims should
be ashamed. You are right that many stories are known about the thai
police, but believe me that this money will be used for what it get
collected.

THE FRANK REPLIED BACK

Hi Andy,

my name is Frank. I am the person who initiated all this on the Khaosan
police station. The Chief of the station, Pol.Col.. Wirichan allowed it,
even it is against police law to start donations without asking before
the head office of the metropolitan police. We had after a while some
problems because some people tried to get on this money but we refused
it. We said that we stick to the way as we printed on the box. We got
then after this problems backup from the head of the Thai police. It
goes to the Princess Chakri Sirindhorn who is the acting vice-director
of the Red Cross in Thailand. She is from everybody loved and known as a
very honest person. We are sure that the money goes from there the right
way.

About the toner:
We used to print all this an QMS Minolta Colour Laserprinter which have
the big plus that the printouts are not washed away when it starts to
rain. And it was raining, not only one time. Some people put their own
posters there and they was washed away because they was printed with
cheap ink. The next problem is that we printed every day at least 100
pages update, with an inkjet printer we would have needed around 3 hours
only for the print, that is a long time. The paper will be after it wet
and there are many other little problems, the paper bends, etc. The
solution with the laserprinter was a good solution. You can check that
the toner for this printer is very expensive. We ran after 1500 pages
out of toner, so we had to replace the toner. We are still printing and
we update now every day around 50 pages. We kept for all expenses bills
and this was checked from the Monitor group of the police. This is a
group of as honest known public people who control activites from the
police to avoid problems. When we started all this we said that we want
to prove that the police can be honest. I can promise you as an
foreigner (german) that as long as I am involved nobody touch this
money. It goes the way as we promised and that's it!

Yesterday, 23. January 2005, we openend the donation box and counted in
the Khaosan Road together with some foreigners the money. The amount was
around 820.000 Baht. We will send this money today (Monday) to the bank
where we change it to an cheque and will present this cheque to the
Princess.

We stopped the big box now and will put a small box for some donations
more on it. This money will be sent again to the red cross.

If you need more informations contact me. I wrote not to you that you
that you post this email. YOu can if you want but I just wanted to
inform you that we do this really honest.

Sorry to say, I know of many times this happens.



I found our or had it clarified that the lady they gave the
money to represents the Red Cross, so I think this is good.
This is one of them time where I wished I was a journalist,
I want people to help the Tsunami Survivors, however
I do not want temptation to make good people into bad
people. Too much money in the wrong hands can
cause a problem.

10 times per day a person wants money from me as
a traveler in the cheap countries. I want to give as much
as possible and to as many as possible. But this is very
difficult and I become jaded. I normally have my body parts
theory, if they are missing body parts I give.

I think the number one solution if to help the survivors of
the Tsunami by visiting Asia now and next year. You will
hurt the survivors. Plan a new trip this year, go to Asia.

Frank wrote a letter, and I believe he is from Thailand.
It takes a lot of work to write in English, and this letter
took lots of time. It deserves respect, and needed
published. I hope the world helps the survivors of the
Tsunami and the world become safe.

Note it is the Media or Press that keeps police honest.
NGO need to be kept honest also as they are permeated
with corruption as our the police forces of the world.

On a side note, one reason I do not put my photo on the
pages is so when I make a remark, an angry person
cannot find me... hehehe

I do go to dangerous places, and I say what I think.

Thanks Frank, I will maybe go give blood. I hope
the box is safe, but for me, I will give direct.
