Food in Rwanda

OH how I miss the food! I was living in Kigali for about 3 months and fell in love with how simple the food is, how easy it is to make, and how delicious it can be! When we cooked, we basically used the same ingredients to make the base sauce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, green bell pepper, carrots, curry powder, and tomatoe paste...this would either have goat meat, small fish(especially when in Burundi), or just more carrots, then poured over rice or pasta. Another normal sauce was the peanut sauce! Also, had lots of beans, cassava, and bananas! Plenty of salads(shredded cabbage/carrots with a dressing of vinegar and mayonnaise, or sliced onions/beets with vinegar), lots of fresh fruit(amazing pineapple! bananas, passionfruit, and mangoes) In town in the little shops, we would have snacks of samosas(meat filled triangles of fried dough), amendaze, (kind of like a thick doughnout) and bruschette,(goat meat kabobs). A typical restaurant buffet includes salad, noodles(like plain spaghetti, sauce with a few pieces of goat meat, some plantains, rice, beans, and chips, (fried potatoes! soooo good dipped in mayonnaise!)A specialty were the omeletes, of eggs and fried potatoes with onions cooked in them! Of course whenever we went into the city, you could find plenty of European/American food(pizza, hamburgers, etc)But who wants to go to Rwanda to eat food you can get at home? I definitely miss the breakfast of chai tea, or coffee, porridge, bananas, and bread with blue band butter! Oh, and FANTA! Citrone and Orange Fanta, Sprite, and Coke EVERYWHERE! The food is so good! Not much dairy ever,(milk, butter, cheese, and yogurt are expensive!) and meat is very special, but I still loved everthing I ate, and when I came back to the states and went grocery shopping for the first time, I couldnt believe how many choices we have here in America! Crazy! Enjoy Rwanda! And the food! Its so beautiful how simple and true it is!

I spent most of my stay in Butare and the food was great. It is important to travel in good company: the wait was sometimes 1.5-2 hours. The food was great and emphasized natural flavoring. My favorite dish was a whole tilapia stuffed with bell peppers/onions/tomatoes and cooked til black against coals. Common starches include rice, beans, and mostly french fries. Typical meals usually include isombe, which is basically stewed kasava leaves (+ peanut butter).

Rwandan food culture is pretty simple. The main dishes are rice/noodles with beans/peas, boiled potatoes, cassava, plaintains, simple meat dishes with not too many spices, and lots and lots of french fries. Rwanda supposedly has the best chips in Africa, although I have not traveled to other African countries yet, so it\\\\\\\'s hard to say. You can go to a buffet featuring all of the main dishes I listed above for about $1 USD at the moment.

You must try the tropical fruits - they have really good mangos, bananas and pineapples which are sweeter than the ones I\\\\\\\'ve tasted in the US and elsewhere.

When I stayed in Kigali, these were my typical meals: breakfast: eggs, toast with peanut butter or jam and pineapple or bananas; lunch: rice or noodles with beans or peas, french fries and plaintains with fruit for dessert; dinner: grilled fish with french fries or rice with beans. Snacks consist of peanuts, spicy fried potato sticks, samosas, and tea with lots of milk and sugar. The best thing to order when you want a cold drink is soda or beer. Keeping a water bottle on you at all times is pretty important, too - you cannot drink from the tap.

When you go to a restaurant, it usually takes awhile for your food to come to the table - about 1 hour is the usual wait, but sometimes it took up to two hours!

Bruschettes (grilled meat or fish on a stick, kind of like a shish-kabob without the veggies) is sold in most restaurants. One of my favorite dishes was grilled tilapia from Karibu. Most restaurants serve all dishes with salad and french fries. I was warned that I shouldn\\\\\\\'t eat the salad because of germs but I ended up eating it all the time and never got sick.

In addition to Rwandan cuisine- there are many places featuring food from other countries such as Indian, Belgian, French and even Chinese. There are also supermarkets that will have a lot of import items such as Pringles, chocolate, ice cream and other foreign brands. One that I frequented a lot is called \\\\\\\'La Sierra.\\\\\\\' They sell pizza, samosas, croissants in addition to other junk food.

One restaurant that I recommend is Cactus, which is a Belgian place that serves pizza! It\\\\\\\'s very expensive though and has a very colonial feel. But the food is worth it and there\\\\\\\'s a beautiful view of the city. They also have excellent \\\\\\\'chocolat chaud\\\\\\\' or hot chocolate.

There are no specific food customs I can think of - but Rwandans are hearty eaters and if you\\\\\\\'re invited over to someone\\\\\\\'s house, they\\\\\\\'ll serve you generous portions.
