New Zealand is like the United States in the 1950's when it comes to business practices and ethics ... that means "anything goes" as long as you don't get caught. Government officials are able to hide business dealings by citing irrational "commercially sensative" claims, and they get away with that. Nobody questions those claims, even though there are signs of paying too much or other suspicious symptoms. This is especially bad in the "local government" area. The public has no idea what is being done with their money. Even the politicians are kept in the dark as the bureaucrats spend tons of money that ends up in a deep hole.

Former Immigration Service boss Mary Anne Thompson was committed today 17 September 2009 for trial on fraud charges.

Thompson entered not guilty pleas in Wellington District Court to three charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage, after her lawyer conceded at a depositions hearing she had a case to answer.

Thompson claimed she held a PhD from the London School of Economics (LSE) -- credentials she used when applying for New Zealand public service jobs in 1989, 1998 and 2004.

n previous hearings, one witness from the LSE told the court Thompson's thesis seemed to have "disappeared into a black hole", while another said her doctorate application had been marked "treat as abandoned".

Thompson last year resigned from the senior position in the Labour Department after being accused of a conflict of interest for helping family members gain residency in New Zealand.

Earlier in the hearing, Crown solicitor Grant Burston said Thompson told police she believed "in her head" she had been awarded the degree.

However, she also acknowledged to police she had not been awarded either a Masters or a Doctorate degree, he said.

Leaving soon, doesnt matter - NZ - NZ

Moving to New Zealand is the worst decision many immigrants have ever made. The kiwi population exudes an exhausting litany of lies fed to them daily by a lying, venal media and government. That the bovine populace are ultimately only interested in getting as much cash of you as they can should not come as a surprise to anyone once they understand this.

The kiwi is trained to believe that they are Gods Gift to the Earth and this unshakeable, idiotic belief, coupled with their poor education and their distorted world-view makes a lethal combination when confronted with anything other. They will not change, they will not learn that they are weak and parochial, and when they are asked to do something about corruption the first thing they look for is a rug to sweep it under.

Sweet Azz.

As a Canadian who has been in NZ 7 years the question would be better framed please give examples of non-corrupt practices/people in NZ as in 7 years it is the most corrupt place I have ever been. I cannot think of one Kiwi Govt official, business person or contractor who is not corrupt - sorry.

My advice - DO NOT EVEN THINK OF COMING TO NZ!

NZ is very good at P.R. because its whole economy is dependent on bringing in migrants with cash to spend. They spin their national image in an amazing virtuoso performance of Internet Impression Management. Nice place ot visit - dont move there!
