The Positive Reason to be in Guatemala

It is very easy to find a hard working person in Guatemala.

"I guess the moral here is: you must be careful what you pretend to be because in the end you are who you're pretending to be."
- Quote from movie "Mother Night."

In my opinion, it is quite easy to find people of "strong character" in Guatemala.

Yesterday, I was having a conversation with a new friend by the name of Richard, he used two words in a way that was enlightening. I was thinking, and saying some truly negative comment about the tourists or travelers in Guatemala.
"They are a bunch of metro-sexual wimps."

As best I remember, he said.
"Yes, there are some soft characters."

Soft Character versus people of Strong Character
I went searching about, and found a few pages about the "Six Pillars of Character."

1. Trustworthiness

2. Respect

3. Responsibility

4. Fairness

5. Caring

6. Citizenship

He is right to instruct and guide me to use the words "soft characters," and not to think of them as a bunch of metro-sexual wimps. Note, I believe that anyone that spends years trying to dread their hair, decorate their body, and wearing clothes that stick out like a sore thumb to be people be another version of metro-sexuals. The people have soft character, they are screaming at other people, look at me, that is not strong character.

The one things I respect most about Guatemalans.
When I am walking down the road and meet a person from Guatemala, they say,
"Hola."
I say,
"Hola."

Sometimes they are shy, but I got about a 99 percent chance if I say hello, they will respond and say hello.

I just cannot grant respect to any human that can ignore a hello from another person on the planet. How do you ignore a happy thought? It takes and extreme hold onto something ugly to do that.

Now what is up with this quote above?
"I guess the moral here is: you must be careful what you pretend to be because in the end you are who you're pretending to be."
- Quote from movie "Mother Night."
If you are pretending to give respect to people who do not deserve respect, then who are you? I want to listen to people, and not pretend, or try to agree just to keep the peace. This is the damage done by political correctness, everyone apologizes, and avoids telling the truth, and this empower them of low character to thrive.

This again can all be shortened to
"Avoid the idiots, and surround yourself by people you respect."

This movie "Mother Night" was a great example why we must weigh the words we use, because each word has weight and defines us. However, the thought in your head may have 10 times more value than the ones you say.

It is easy to find hard working people on planet earth, who get up every day and do simple jobs like the boy above carrying the fruit for his family. If you pass a boy like this, say hello, you will find a boy who is quick to smile. If I cannot elicit smile and laughter from my fellow man, then
"I just say no."

The Positive Reasons to be in Guatemala

My Best Non Fiction books? Audio Books?

Ed sent an e-mail asking,
"What are your best non-fiction books? Do you use audio books?."

My feeling is, people generally read non-fiction to learn, sometimes I read autobiographies or biographies to learn about people I respect, I read the book above about Warren Buffet, a man I respect.

I get on reading kicks, where I try to find books to learn..
I read for book for fun, I seldom read a book to learn, but the book I read to learn, or more correctly tried to read was by Jacob Nielsen, and is excellent. However, implementation is more difficult than reading it, and hard to get designers and coders to read.

The Tao of Travel: Enlightenments from Lives on the Road
- Paul Theroux

I purchased the Kindle Version of this, and am trying to read on my computer, I am not having much luck, but this should mean nothing to you, it is a good book. I am having trouble reading it, probably because it is about me in a way, I am a traveler, he is of the same mind, so nothing new for me.

I hate reading books on the computer, and will only buy a Kindle when the price is under 50 USD, but truly would do anything to avoid reading digital stuff.

I for sure believe that non-fiction is best with paper, while entertaining books I can read on the computer.

TRAVEL WRITING 2.0:
Earning Money from your Travels in the New Media Landscape by Tim Leffel

My Name or Bio is in this book…
I know Tim Leffel, and he sent me a PDF copy of the book, I would say it is a good if not great book to read if you want to be a travel writer.

I want thank Tim for including my name in the book as a Travel Writer.
PerceptiveTravel.com

So here is another book I have tried to read, but like I said, I read for enjoyment, and this is more or less a guide to being a travel writer. Since, at the end of the day, I have no desire to be called a Travel Writer, it is hard to read, I will instead say the same as Paul Theroux.
"I am a writer that travels."

I have no desire to be known as a travel writer, it is an insult.

I read for fun, I have a goal of enjoying my life, there are times when I must study and learn about the business I am in, with the hope of earning more money. At the end of the day I hate to read non-fiction travel writing, I do enjoy James Michener, Wilbur Smith, or Clive Cussler, they write books that teach me geography, culture and history wrapped up in a good tale.

I find that real travel writers write only to make money and will say about anything if the sponsor or advertiser is giving them money, they write as agreed.

I have come to the conclusion, the only safe reading of true authority is books, and now am starting to feel that any expert is a fool to write on the internet, therefore in many ways I am fool to be writing this travel Blog, why would I compete with Facebook?

The Internet has now become 99.99 percent for entertainment, and as a way of conveying knowledge to readers it is horrible. What is good, is you can reach out and touch real people, a reader here can take the time, and write me personally, and if they are respectful, nice, and try to ask good questions, I will answer.

Stopping the comment completely stopped the wanna be famous people from trying to post comments to try to prove they are smart, this was and is a great decision for me, my life is better with no comments from readers.

Now, I do enjoy personal e-mails, where Ed wants to know who I am, and I want to know who Ed is, and we can become friends. At the end of the day, I want friends I can respect who do not want to be clever.

Therefore, I guess in conclusion to Ed’s question about Non-Fiction, there are times when I read book because I need to for business. There are a few biographical books I read because of great respect for the subject person.

Search for people who are striving to be men or women of respect. There are people who refuse to be involved in the petty, who have a vision of life that transcends others, for example Warrant Buffet. Do not be a first adopter of books, do not read because all your friends are reading the book, this mean you are probably trying to one of the many, trying to find comfort in the group, this will not make a somebody out of nobody.

My guess right now, I must shake hand with 100 people to find one worthy of respect, that you can invite home to dinner with your mother and father, friends and relatives.

Look at the person next to you, and ask the question,
"Do I want this man to marry my sister?"
"Do I want this girl to marry my son?"

Do you want this writer to influence a generation?

We will be, and are known by the friends we keep, take good care of the books you read, they should be your friends. Avoid idle friendships with people who will drag you down to their level. Read some non-fiction books that teach you to be respected, and forget the money, it is all an illusion, real currency is respect.

Intuition - Allows me to Travel 1000 Miles on a Whim

"My mind is like a bad neighborhood, you do not want to enter alone."
-- I have none one to blame this on…
I scared the hell out of people on a daily basis: this is a huge problem here on Lago Atitlan when you are surrounded by some truly unfiltered minds incapable of one savvy moment. Yesterday, I tried my best to convince an Israeli girl to wash my clothes, she asked why?
I said,
"If I could convince you it was a good idea to wash my clothes, then I can do anything in life."

This is an example of an Israeli girl, after Army, (HOT --- Sizzles), this is Carmen, if you know how to contact this girl, I am still crazy, she changed her e-mail and I am a little lost.

Lago Atitlan, Guatemala
I intuitively know, I am in the insane asylum, which by the way is about as close to paradise as you can get on planet earth. There is never a dull moment when inside paradise, which is one intuitive step from crazy.

---------------------------------

Intuition Defined:
-- the ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason.

I have been living by my intuition and instincts for so long, some days I forget to use my brain. I can spot crazy from 50 feet away, and steer closer to take a look, enter into a conversation and truly stay safe and sound inside my head, 100 percent aware the person is nuts.

Generally, Lago Atitlan is one big Catch 22, you will never find a clear path of reason here, I am surrounded by people who are off the path, they have lost the plot. The great part is this, I intuitively know when a person has lost the plot, I smell it, I feel it, and can dodge them without pain involved.

Generally, at least a few are searching, the ones back home often believe they are sane, too serious…

Did you know, crazy people exude delusional confidence?
I listen to many stories per day here on the lake, and generally they are full of holes. I mean inconsistencies and incongruence’s that an attorney would open without thinking. When two people meet who are crazy, they tend to stabilize each other, I enjoy listening, because I know they are nuts, both consciously and subconsciously, there world is out of harmony.

"They are serious and delirious."
- James Easter

There is an over-zealous nature to people who lack true confidence, they run, they escape, and surround themselves with crazies who will validate their unfiltered opinions. They act as if they know, and this sucks in many followers, but few will find he correct path, that is certain.

Alice in Wonderland
I celebrate the idea of reading babble, I celebrate the idea of going into places that are as close to crazy as possible, I love border towns, where two cultures clash. There is true genius somewhere on the edge, but you must be brave and trust your intuitions, or I am 100 percent sure the Dragons will eat you.

I know that if I am capable of trusting myself, believing in my intuition, that I will come out of "Wonderland" without a scratch and a better person, stronger and enriched. If you study my last 13 year’s of travel, I have not had many true problems, I just get close, I am protected by my intuitions. If a person tells you travel horror stories, think on this, they truly screwed up, the best traveler have no truly bad stories of theft and problems, we navigate freely.

I added the movie, "One Week" to my list of best travel movies, a rather slow movie for me, but I am out, you are in, therefore we are on different sides of the fence. I would recommend you watch the movie, I think on a couple of days of his journey, this boy was able to see clearly, in a sort of pretentious, over intellectualized way.
My Movies

Intuitively you know you are on the wrong path, why do you continue to walk, with an act of faith, you can walk on the path less traveled.

I am 100 percent sure, if I am willing to wash my own clothes, it is a spiritual moment. And I was hoping the Israeli girl could, would, should understand; it is about sharing, giving and not taking, to have an intuitive leap of faith, to know there are people who are to be trusted.

I am too Happy - Two Movies that Explains Why People Travel for Years

Last night I watched a movie made in 1946 called The Razor’s Edge, fully believing the best travel movie of all time is The Razor’ Edge made in 1984. These two movies explain my world of travel, this is great for me, if someone truly wanted to understand, it would be easier to point.

Bill Murray starred in the 1986 movie, which lost about 8 million dollars. The gossip is this, he agreed to be in Ghostbusters 3, providing they made the movie fully aware they would lose money.

There is a great reason for 1 in 1000 people to travel, while for the rest, it is better to go work everyday.

I am going to stop, no use in sharing my excitement, but Tyrone powers gave the excuse to loaf, this is just a lose thread for the motivated to pull and see what happens.

It is Not Important to Listen or Observe

There are days when apathy rules my life, I came from a place where people would say the "Country Bumpkins" rule. Generally, the further I roam from home, the more I appreciate my mother and father. I am truly grateful to be born in Indiana, and grow up where people actually want to listen.

Jerold Graham, my Father

Sharry Graham, my Mother

Country Bumpkin Defined:
A person, usually from a rural area, the south or small town; who speaks or behaves in a manner that indicates a lack of understanding of the ever changing, modern world. Country bumpkins tend to speak in terms of social overtones indicative of pre-civil rights America and characteristically speak in offensive terms without knowledge of doing so. A bumpkin is more ignorant than uneducated, though most are probably uneducated. Either way, educated or not, country bumpkins are neccesarily ignorant. Country bumpkins come in every ethnicity and in both genders.

People who practice southern "good ole boy" politics are country bumpkins.

People who still say "colored" when referring to African Americans or say "heya, heya,... heya, heya" when referring to Native Americans are country bumpkins.

"Did you hear that country bumpkin call the people on the nearby reservation, 'injuns'?"

What happened to people in America?
Rich or poor, smart or dumb, educated or illiterate, we all possess one great opportunity in life, we have the ability to live a life of respect. I can find many respectable people in my home town of Orland, there is no reason to overlook many small things, they are generally respectable people.

I am too close to the USA here in Guatemala, there are too many Americans, they make me very angry, what is going on inside the country I love? Americans have more opportunities than any country on the planet, a person in the USA can do anything, be anything, and it feels as if the youth are becoming the worst possible examples of humans. Europe is not much better, and there anybody my age, I think anybody below the age of 60 from the USA is not from the Greatest Generation, what happened.

Are all developed societies doomed?

Facebook Quotes
I am gaming the hell out of Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and all the other social networks, and guess what we are trying to push HoboTraveler.com as a social network… aagh, it is the only way to neutralize Google, with the hope we can say goodbye to traffic from Google.

I think FACE is incredibly brilliant, this site allows, and gives people the ability to celebrate exactly what is the base motivation of people, to talk about themselves.

I put a quote up yesterday.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=546827480&sk=info

I put a person I admire: Buster Spade from Orland, Indiana, who is now dead, an old farmer who I respect more than any person in my life.

Looking for Friends?
I love Lago Atitlan, but in so many ways it is like Orland, it is fully of Country Bumpkins, people I love to live with, but have trouble keeping my brain occupied.

I truly have zero need or use of tourists, they almost always let me down, I do not respect their actions, therefore I do not respect them.

This is truly weird?
I used to not tell people I have a Blog, because I did not want to talk about it during the day. My fear was 99.99 percent unfounded.

I cannot tell the primitive local people, but I can tell the so-called educated ones, because they just do not care.

Example: I often do this:

1. I say,
"I am a travel writer, my Blog is Top Travel Blog on National Geographic Adventurer, Forbes.com, Frommer’s Budget Travel, and 100’s of more."

2. I write down on a piece of paper. Andy Graham, HoboTraveler.com.

3. I wait, not really, I have stopped waiting, nothing happens.

4. I have a 1 in 500 chance, the educated group will ever investigate.

I am anonymously Blogging, even when I try to not be anonymous. This is great for me, because I do not need to be afraid one of my daily acquaintances is reading, I can say, take photo, be truly as honest as I desire, with almost no fear of problems.

What have I learned?
Generally, nobody is out searching for friends, 99.99 percent of people are searching for drinking buddies, with no morals, and no values.

Nobody trust anybody, they believe I am lying, that make me safe to tell the truth, I do not want fame, and it is easy to not be a famous travel writer, when nobody believes anyone.

Fun stuff, but I am still searching for more highly educated country bumpkins, who hold honesty, and being a good person as values to admire. My friend Mark said,
"Andy, you are hoping to find people to disprove your growing opinion about the globilizaztion of idiocy."

I do not have any use for Twitter, Facebook does allow me write my niece and nephews and say Happy Birthday, Linked in has some merits.

I think I should be able to join a group of people who want to talk about James Michener. I should be able to find a group of people who admire Henry David Thoreau. I would like to find people who want to be friends in real life who live near me on Lago Atitlan.

Connecting real humans, to have real human contact, not to be on the internet, but to meet in real life.

Well, whatever it is not important to listen or observe, because this is not a trait that is celebrated, but you better do so, or you will lose respect for yourself.

I did not proofread this, in celebration of people who respect people for who they are, and not how they look.

It is Not Important to Listen or Observe

Questionable Tattoo: Love all, Trust few.

I saw a cute girl on the boat yesterday, in a I do not trust anyone sort of way, she had an advertisement on her body.

"Love all, Trust few."

Just think, she would probably be very angry at me for taking this photo… hehehe, I truly hope the opposite, I hope she is very proud of what she put on her body with permanent ink.

This got me thinking about the ZZ Top song: Sharp Dressed Man

This song always enters my head when I lose the woman to the sharp dressed man, but it also has started to really hurt as I get older, there is nothing better than youth.

I am always motivated to try to understand the crazies of the planet. I used to believe that everyone does everything for a reason, now, I have decided the opposite. Creativity is like a quantum leap, it is completely random and accidental, there is no way to surreptitiously create something from nothing, it is an accidental combination of two things, this interrupts causal determinism. Creativity is often the absence of thought, sort of like a cow.

Well, I think she felt something, she did not think about it, but wanted to copy all her friends and get a tattoo, but wanted to be intellectual, but maybe she failed, my opinion is nothing, it is her opinion that matter, her inner scorecard.

I will advise this, when a person says,
"I do not trust anyone."
Run.
My advice is to do an about face and run.

New Look on HoboTraveler.com
"They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Coz' every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man."

--- ZZ Top
I am sure many of you have realized that HoboTraveler.com has put on some new clothes, we are looking sharper.

I was working at Metal Spinners, a factory in Angola, Indiana when I was 18, a man said to me,
"I never say the word LOVE, because to many girls have had sex with me, when I said the word."

Hmm, I think he said, what you say, or how you look is more important to people than who you really are, this sabotages love… I believe all people are searching for "intimacy," to be loved by someone who truly knows them as they really are, and not for their fat wallet, or sharp clothes. It is always amazing how often people believe a lies will make them lovable.

ZZ Top Sharp Dressed Man Lyrics

Clean shirt, new shoes
And I don't know where I am goin' to.
Silk suit, black tie,
I don't need a reason why.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Coz' every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

Gold watch, diamond ring,
I ain' missin' not a single thing.
And cufflinks, stick pin
When I step out I'm gonna do you in.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Coz' every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

Top coat, top hat,
I don't worry coz my wallet's fat.
Black shades, white gloves,
Lookin' sharp and lookin' for love.
They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Coz' every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

I Got Lectured about God by a San Pedro Local Girl here in Guatemala

"You Who Think You Know It All Are Annoying to Those of Us That Do"
--- Cannot find someone to blame for this quote.
I enjoy talking to people about God, however 99.99 percent of the people who want to discuss God annoy me endlessly, like talking to mental midgets.

Example:
Why do religious people always start their sales pitch out by making you feel guilty?

Small Talk with Angelica
I stop, talk, joke, and make small talk every day with a local girl here in San Pedro la Laguna on Lago Atitlan, Guatemala that sells orange juice. Here name is Angelica, her first language is Tzutujil, but her Spanish is great.

She helped me translate Andy into Tutujil ---- my name in Spanish is Andres, with an accent on the e,

Andres is Alix or maybe Alish in English pronunciation.
Yesterday, another person in the Internet café said it was "Lish TA."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tz'utujil_language

Evangelicals in Guatemala
Evangelicalism or Evangelicos is a dominating alternative to Catholicism here on Lago Atitlan, and truly annoying the number of Missionaries trying to convert Christians to Christians here.
THERE IS ZERO REASON TO SEND CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES TO GUATEMALA
Everyone here is Christian, please get a life, stop being incredibly stupid and go to the Sub-Sahara and convert some Islamic.
Evangelicalism is a Protestant Christian movement which began in Great Britain in the 1730s[1] and gained popularity in the United States during the series of Great Awakenings of the 18th and 19th century.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicalism
Angelica asked me,
"Are you Evangelicos?"
I said,
"No, I am Lutheran."
She looked at me with sad eyes, and I say something to the effect in Spanish, it is the same as Evangelicos, just another of the hundreds of type of "Protestants."

I wish at this juncture in the conversation, Angelica would have had just a little modestly, humility, and Christian acceptance that she is not God, and does not know everything about God. I then entered a moral dilemma, the girl was obviously wanting to be good. But, in her lack of understanding, here laziness, she just blinding listened to a preacher who never told her,
"Angelica, you are protestant, and this is what that word means."

My moral dilemma is, what am I responsible for here? Should I attempt to help her stop being a simpleton, or is that ignorance bliss?

I am quite sure, she sings, wails, and screams her beliefs at church, and in a way, I believe she has a least a 1 in 1000 chance of going to heaven.

However, because she will probably never truly understand, because she nobody will explain, she will probably get bored one day and start being more or less the same as everyone around here, which is not what I believe God would want.

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." – Matthew 7:15 KJV

In other words, Jesus’ point here is that just because someone appears to look pious on the surface, that doesn’t mean they aren’t filled with lies and deceit. Therefore it is not wise to trust in mere appearances. That is, it isn’t safe to just look at what a minister or teacher of the gospel is doing and conclude that they’re walking with God simply because they appear to be friendly or intelligent. In fact, even if they perform what appears to be a miracle that still wouldn’t be enough to prove that they are who they are claiming to be. After all, even demons can perform

Beware of Idiots acting like Nice People

What do I believe?
I believe that live is a huge test, can we listen to incredible amounts of crazy information and still say today,
"I do not care, I feel this is the honest way, the right thing to do, and I am going to do it."
"Why?"
"Because, I believe that being honest is good, and clever is evil."

Bottom line, bring things out into the light of day and allow them to be judged, by our actions, not by our words. Fun stuff, unless you are feeling guilty 24/7, then all this is painful - get a life, stop being clueless, if you behave all day, you do not have to apologize or be ashamed to be "you."

I believe anyone acting pious, is not pious.

Smart to Smart and Idiot to Idiot the Internet
I think, dream, and hope the Internet allows people with the same hobbies to find each other. I am worried now, I think Facebook is making us all the same, giving an emotional and mental lobotomy to all my close friends.

Psycho Babble Research for Dictionary
I told James the other day,
"I want to make a dictionary of Hippie Dippie, Psycho-Babble."
He said,
"Why?"
"So I know all the right buzz-words to use to try to get into the pants of all the granola for lunch bunch."

Really, I enjoy funky words, and some people take themselves very serious, if I know more Psycho-Babble words than them, I can get them to shut up and leave me alone in peace.

The Word Travel is Ambiguous - What is the Intention?

Travel is just the trip, how do you intend to live when you arrive?

"What are you going to do when you arrive elsewhere?"

I am working on a movie project here in Guatemala, I am downloading every Travel Movie I can find right now, because I am trying to choose the Best Travel Movies. It is fun, I watch a movie, then call it a project…
"Best Travel Movies"

It is annoying project, because my definition of travel is radically different than other "Travel Writers," who in reality seldom live elsewhere. Travel Writers have romanticized travel to the point whereby travel is living a dream. Sadly, 99 percent of people refuse to admit their trip was less than a dream, and often a nightmare, they could not wait to arrive home. My lifestyle is the dream, however, only when I live in a new location for 1-3 months.

We travel from point A to point B to live, when we arrive we hope to be enlightened.

Bill Murray talking with wise man in India, Bill is starting to learn why he traveled elsewhere in the Movie the Razor’s Edge.

The Book "The Tao of Travel," by Paul Theroux talking about Travel
- Note, the importance of elsewhere is discussed in movie "Don Quixote."

Preface: The Importance of Elsewhere
AS A CHILD, yearning to leave home and go far away, the image in my mind was of flight—my little self hurrying off alone. The word "travel" did not occur to me, nor did the word "transformation," which was my unspoken but enduring wish. I wanted to find a new self in a distant place, and new things to care about. The importance of elsewhere was something I took on faith. Elsewhere was the place I wanted to be. Too young to go, I read about elsewheres, fantasizing about my freedom. Books were my road. And then, when I was old enough to go, the roads I traveled became the obsessive subject in my own books. Eventually I saw that the most passionate travelers have always also been passionate readers and writers. And that is how this book came about. The wish to travel seems to me characteristically human: the desire to move, to satisfy

Theroux, Paul (2011). The Tao of Travel: Enlightenments from Lives on the Road

This is a screenshot from Yahoo, the internet it a great example of what motivates humans, and what are priorities are, truly getting more anal by the day.
I have many people say to me,
"Andy, you do not write about travel."
I will say,
"I often explain how to buy a plane ticket, show a map, then tell you the cost."

I know what they mean, but what can I say, there is no way I am going to do what they want. I write about living when I arrive, while in reality, many people want me to point them to an illusion, to help them foster their delusion of travel so they can justify paying thousands of dollars to be disappointed.

They want to go live a dream or fantasy, I often politely say, the best way to do that it to have sex with one of the locals, or tourist, that will give you the rush you want. Please do not over-intellectualize the feeling you are searching for:
And generally, what do people do when they arrive, they get drunk, then shag anyone close enough, then call it a spiritual moment, wrapped in tattoos and dreads.

We all travel with the hope of becoming a better person, then hang around with some real scoundrels outside, where there are no social norms in effect. The faster you travel, the less people can change you, the slower you travel, then you can learn from the locals, can you be still and listen?

Introspection is maybe you want, save your money for the most part, take a newspaper into the toilet, and call it a movement.

Yes, arriving at a destination can give you enlightenment, however only after you stay in the location for one month. Two-days of visiting a new culture is like reading the cliff notes, when you spend a month in a location, you are on the road to enlightenment, you have started to read the book.

Stay longer more than shorter, if you move fast, this means you cannot stand to be alone with yourself, and you need to run.

The Word Travel is Ambiguous - What is the Intention?
