Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is about 2500 Meters above sea level, at this altitude you are the same as Bogota, Colombia, Quito Ecuador an Cusco, Peru. Where I am located now in Ziway, Ethiopia at 1650 meters is about the same as Panajachel, Guatemala or maybe Baguio, Philippines. Normally when you combine about 1500 meters above sea level and place in the Tropics the environment is great.

Urbanization has presently killed this city, however in the future it should be quite enjoyable.

The main street of the city is under construction. I am in a dust bowl, the stone here maybe is a volcanic rock, when it is smashed into gravel it makes an annoyingly small sand particle. This sand floats in the air as particulate matter and makes breathing difficult.

The main roads of Ethiopia are excellent; all the small feeder roads are this pumice type dust road. A great base for an asphalt or concrete road I would suppose, however for general enjoyment of the city it is the pits, truly a man made dust bowl environment.

Do you like the little smiley faces on the map, it makes it easier to understand?

  • Andy,Of possible interest geologically, is that your moving along the west edge of the Great Rift Valley or East African Rift. Which is an area of tectonic & volcanic activity. The Earth plates are moving apart in the area your in and will eventually separate the African plate in two, apparently. Long after we're gone of course. The American Journal of Human Genetics has in the past published research suggesting that this area is near the cradle/origin of man. UT at Austin and National Geographic have done similar studies.UT ArticleWondering if your planning a trip to Olduvai?Eric
