Nationwide Internet in USA Travel Tip I have more problems in the USA finding internet access than any other country on the planet, Internet Cafes are scarce or non-existent.
How do you find Internet Café in the USA? Give up, not a good option…
Photo of me using the Internet in the Angola, Indiana Carnegie Public Library. The connection was extremely fast, however Yahoo Messenger was blocked, and therefore my business need of talking to Boy Genius in Indian was not possible.

If I was traveling in the USA, this would be my tactics.
I would drive from coast to coast in an old beat up van, set up with curtains on all the windows so I could sleep anywhere there was free overnight parking.
I would buy a palm computer with WIFI access, so I could quickly test a connection. The word “unsecured” means nothing, in today’s world you must actual gain access to guarantee you truly have free internet.
Whenever I passed near a library I would stop and see if there was free internet access.
Whenever I got near a Motel, I would pull into the parking lot.
I would stop into computer stores along the road and ask if they knew free hotspots.
Coffee shops would be my last choice, however a good option if all the above failed.
When I was in one city using the internet, I would find the address of the Libary in the next city on the path.
I would randomly use the internet, I would not make special trips to any of the above locations, when I passed a likely option, and I would try to use the connection. However, please be aware, at any location check the connection, before you buy the coffee.
Warning, many free internet connections in the USA not-to-cleverly block many great uses for the internet. Do not assume anything is possible until you check it.
Hmm, I would probably do some couch surfing, hoping the girls of the USA liked my photo.

Andy, I just got back from a 6 month road trip of the USA. If you think it is bad - try the UK. I had a car in the USA. By far, the easiest way to get free wifi is in the suburbs. I would drive a couple of blocks into a suburb, then drive slower down the street searching for wifi. When I found it, I would stop and sit in the car with my laptop. Otherwise, a lot of coffee shops (if you can find one). Rarely motels and rarely shops. It's really pot luck as to whether people have secured their wifi or not. That's it.
I am glad to hear the suburbs is still good in the USA. Last year I was at a friends house and about 7 connections were all secured.Europe is a difficult place...

Most mcdonald's now offer wi-fi. Cheaper than a coffee shop.
