Andy, that's a nice looking market. Ever see any other backpackers shopping around? I don't get the idea of sleeping all morning either. The best people you meet, are likely to be met early in the morning. Not a lot of nice people out in the middle of the night.
I have never seen any backpackers at this market. However, in the last few years the Majority of Backpackers eat in Restaurants. To me it apppears a trend to stop cooking at home in the developed countries.
I feel in many ways the extra 20-50 percent people pay for food is one of the pivotal reasons for the economic problems. People appear to be in constant splurge mode. On the other hand Thailand is one of the cheapest places on the planet to eat so I would not expect them to cook here.
I try to eat vegetables, fruits and nuts more than in the past, so I go to these small markets.
