Travel Insurance Paid in a Taxi
I do not walk from Bus Stations to Hotels, I do not walk from Trains, Planes to my Hotel or Hostel rooms. I take a taxi, I truly do not need great shoulder straps for my travel bag, as I refuse to walk long distances with my travel pack.
Why?
The most dangerous time of my travels is from the bus to the Hotel, I have 100 percent of my personal possession on me, and everyone can see this. The robbers know I have all my money, my camera, and any other valuable possessions, it is the time to strike.

I truly feel in danger in Europe when I am taking a subway to a Hostel. I have been robbed twice, and once was on a subway in Madrid Spain, someone pick pocketed me and took my passport, this was all they got, but they knew I was a soft target.
If any way possible, if the fee is under 15 US, I take a taxi, I consider it a travel insurance payment, plus a damn good way to make the first day in a country, the best possible first impression, and help the country get off to a good start.

fine advice, I once had an older friend, now deceased, who talked to a few elderly taxi drivers, then selected the person who'd take him to his hotel, followed by a one day tour of the city.
