I Wished to Live Deliberately

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Mom and Dad wrote today.

Hi Andy, I have been reading this book called Time Is a River by Mary Alice Monroe. I do not know if she has written other books but this is the first I have read, very interesting. Anyway, at the beginning of each chapter was a quote and I thought you might enjoy this one because it made me think of you. I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived Henry David Thoreau Anyway, sometimes I think this is why you travel and live in the manner you do. Your birthday is coming up and it makes me think that since you are working on 11 years travel there must be some satisfaction and learning from your life experience. love prayers mom dad

Answer

It is a good day when you stars align, and a Mother and Father understand their Son.

Thanks to Mom and Dad, I am their Son.
Andy

I read Walden a few times while in High School and have continued to reread this book in the hope of staying on path. Everybody needs a guidebook and I feel Henry David Thoreau wrote one for me when he wrote Walden.

  • I spent hours in Pokhara scouring the bookshops for this book. I was unsuccessful. I still haven't read it, but this quotation was the one that made me want to. It features in the film Dead Poets' Society.

  • Hi AndyI see you have eventually travelled to Khao san road from Rangsit.I have been reading your diary for the past two months with interest. I was waiting for you to return to Banglampoo and have finally caught up with you.I have lived in the Tanee road area of Banglampoo for three years with my Thai wife and two children. We have a travel agency and you are correct; it is a very competitive business and you can obtain a very good quote for flights in this area. Most travel agents, becaause of their close proximity to each other, only add 500 to 1000 baht to the price they pay to the airlines.Yes, we are having our worst month(even though we have only been operating three months!!)If you require a quote just pop in unannounced one day and ask for a price. By the way, do you know the Cool Corner bar on Rambutri? My usual routine is to go there for a drink, read the Bangkok Post, and then have two meals for 30 baht outside the nearby 7/11. I love spicy food. You will also know that tourist figures are way down. There are discounts on many hotels in the area(do you intend to stay in the Rangsit area and travel to Banglampoo daily?)G Holland Canarytravelthailand.com please delete if necessary

  • Chuck, I would say you are living your life deliberately, not by accident. It would be hard for me say those photos were disturbing. I will say they were real, this was a news report and not a joke. Is Thailand enlightend, I would say no, nothing englightening about Thailand, however maybe this is point. I went out to live my life un-edited, and unsanitized, Thailand is real life. It is what happens and what you see when you go outside. However the normal thing to see is a man pissing or a women squatting.
