On the Front Lines A friend Scott wrote an inspirational comment, “But Andy why concern yourself with these trivial affairs and get back to some serious front line reporting of the world. Remember when you got back from Africa and you stated "I accomplished nothing". I think you were on the front lines then. We want blood (your blood). Take your friend on a truly memorable ride. His blood and your blood would be doubly nice. Take it to the edge and jump!”
I have to admit; I am boring myself silly some days here in Guatemala, and have a taste for some on the edge travel. It is confusing to explain, however, I am training and preparing now to go back to Africa, and maybe go see the Stan Brothers, Kyrgy..., Uzbeki..., Trukmeni..., Afghani.., Paki.. Etc, plus up to see Mother Russia.
What am I doing, I am cleaning house on my website, creating support staff to help me along the path, and I hope helping some others to follow the road. It takes money, on the edge takes some serious cash, I realized Gabon, Cameroon and the Congo could be unpredictable, and there is not even guidebook information on some of the countries.
I sold 13 photos to Roughguides West Africa, and the book is out, I have been boning up on how help, but not buy into these big players think about photos, how the videos work, how to take better photos and how to tow all this equipment to place out on the edge. My backpacks are getting heavier...
I have had some great victories, some slow days, and life is good, yet life is a little too calm. I am ready, as you say Scott, to “get back to some serious front line reporting of the world.”
The main goal is to not sell my soul, and thrive in the outside world.
Andy,I think us readers do understand you are preparing for the next "on the edge" travel expedition. It takes lots of money(hobo money) and yet not having all the money you need "keeps you on the edge". Sometimes I think you are similar to "the beats", that generation of poets, writers and wanders(Kerouac, Cassady, Burroughs) who searched for freedom and adventure. In a way your a good book in progress. How it ends no one will know. Will you slip on the edge or regain your balance. The unknown is what really brings us to the edge of our seats. Your an artist painting a picture of a lone hobo wandering into the unknown. Searching for that "something" that we all think is out there, but no one can seem to find. Sure we don't mind reading about the price of "day old waffles" that tourists are paying. But in the end we envision corrupt border crossing, bribes paid, starvation, blood, motorcycle accidents, cold, loneliness, disease and survival. And its so easy to do sitting in a modern air conditioned kitchen in America. Let me shut up. Take it easy Andy.
