Andy,It's Spring Break season -- be careful with your travels in Mexico -- esp. Cancún -- this March / April... unless you want to be a part of the high prices and topless co-eds that Spring Break brings out in American kids escaping to Mexico.

Andy,Reminds me of the hub and spoke system that many airlines use. If your bases can somehow coincide with airline hubs for jumps, and ground transport for hops, I imagine the spider method to be a pretty financially efficient way to move around.To me this is an especially good method to implement when a jump is an international flight and where overland border crossings are more a pain than the savings are worth. It also gives you additional time at the base of the spider to find ever cheaper accommodations.I guess for small countries you may only need one base. The challenge could be avoiding any backtracking, and if you do, the diagram may end up looking more like flowers. Eric

Yes, maybe a flower, not a Spider would be a better goal to keep from backtracking.The cheapest way to travel is to find student type housing and commit to one location for a month. This is my second preference in Europe, first being to drive a van or caravan. I still have not found a way to get license or insurance, but would be my first if I can figure out a way.Get a van, plates, insurance in Europe is presently a high priority. I would like to buy a AC van or car and drive through Africa, as driving is the normal way of travelers in Africa. I could even buy a small economy car, however I would like to sleep in it.Spider or Flower travel needs a base, and makes a lot of sense in places like Tokyo, Japan, New York City, Paris, France, etc where the cost of transportation and rooms is rediculous. I have found man rooms in Montpellier, France and Lisbon, Portugul (2008) that I can rent for 350-700 Euros with WIFI.I would than just snoop around.Note, I have no plans on going to Cancun, this was just a theory of travel.
