Two USED Cell Phones with the cumulative aggregation of all four Bands to make the Quad - 50 to buy in U.S. Dollars and the cost is from 1-15 U.S. Dollars per minute changing always in every country.
With this solution or with any cell phone a person can buy a card or reload in the country they are visiting and they can pay cheap prices for local calls or even the long distance calls.

I will say.. Any advice without the price or cost next to it seems like bad advice to me, this is all about making a Hobo good decision, how to be cheap. The decision if I have unlimited money is easy, I go buy a Satellite telephone.
I realize every day more and more that the only value I have as a professional traveler is my fearless nature to make a commitment and expose myself. If I say I am staying in a the Friendly Guesthouse in Manila and I am paying 450 Pesos per night for a single room with a common shower, then a person can say or come up with advice trying to make me look stupid by finding a cheaper Hostel or Hotel or better. I like this advice, however I do not like the reason some, not all people are doing this, we should all work together, however there are many goals in giving advice. I am working on a site called Hobohideout.com to show the price of Hotels or Hostels on the planet, I am doing this mostly because I want a list of all the prices of Hotels on the planet and cannot find one on the internet. I am working on a site called Flyinghobos.com where I will put the approximate price and all the airports, airlines and for sure all the LCC - Low Cost Carriers on the net to help people to stop getting ripped by travel agents. A guide, when a person or company write a guide they are making a guide, not a solution, however a guide, if they say only one solution then the world is very angry when this is not right for all people. In reality there are about four price ranges of traveler. Under 10, 10 - 30 30-100 and the rich. A person needs to decide there budget and then a webpage should be able to stop the rest of the extra prices from showing. In reality the goal of most sites is to only show or present the 30-100 dollar price range and convince you the other does not exist. I am willing and can say, the under 10 exist in 90 percent of the planet and for sure the 10-30 is on all the planet including the USA and Europe. You can live and sleep on the planet anywhere for less than 30 dollars per night. Maybe not the way you want, however for sure you can sleep. I really think the guidebooks are doomed and 90 percent of the existing websites. Expedia, Orbitz, and all of these pay through the nose systems will stop existing or for sure change. A guidebook will work like this, you will chose you path and countries and you will print out a one book guide for you. A website will be the same, you will chose you price range and all the options will be shown, normally on airplane tickets price will sell the ticket, only the business travelers that in reality are getting a bribe paid to them in the form of frequent flyer miles will pay the most. This is a way of stealing or corrupting the persons buying the ticket and costing the company lots of money. I was getting on the plane in Niamey, Niger, flying to Cairo, a man from the World Food Bank part of the United Nations was getting on the plane, he went to First Class Section. This makes me sick, disgusted and angry. The world is children in mentalities and sensiblities walking around in grown up bodies.
